I went to law school to help make people's lives better and practicing family law has been one of the most rewarding ways in which to do that. Divorce and child custody issues involve some of the most emotionally charged and traumatic events people encounter. I enjoy (for the most part) helping folks see the light at the end of the tunnel and helping them find ways to make the best of an otherwise terrible time in their lives.. While the "law" certainly is a critical part of practicing family law, my own personal experience during my divorce and subsequent custody battles (the divorce took four years to obtain and the custody battles took place about every two years for well over a decade) give me ground level experience about the emotional trauma that goes along with these types of cases. I have to say that I finally got wise and married my best friend from high school and have been happily married to him for almost 20 years. We have lots of kids (only a few of which I actually birthed - the rest came over to eat dinner and never really left) and a very firm belief that it is possible to create your own family, regardless of blood ties. (We were the "Blind Side" long before the movie came out, just for the record.). On the other hand, I served as General Counsel for a multinational corporation prior to practicing family law, so I have a strong business background and understand where the money can sometimes go in family owned businesses. I can comfortably track assests and income streams from many sources and understand how division of marital busineses can alter the business valuations.. Going to court is my work version of chocolate. I absolutely love it and it has the added benefit of being fat free.
I have been representing debtors in bankruptcy for over 10 years in the greater Atlanta area and have successfully handled thousands of cases. I was previously the managing partner at a large bankruptcy firm and recently started my own firm with the goal of providing the highest level of client service. Your case will be handled by me at every stage: initial consultation, case preparation and filing, court appearances, and any miscellaneous questions or concerns that should arise until the case is complete.
I have been practicing law in Georgia since 1988 after graduating from Emory School of Law. My clients include contractors, developers, subcontractors, suppliers, landlords, tenants and business owners. Our firm handles real estate disputes, business disputes, construction related matters including contract review and anyalysis. We file and pursue mechanic's liens. We handle matters all over the state of Georgia and have contacts and local attorneys that allow us to represent clients in matters throughout the United States. I am and AV rated Martindale Hubbell Attorney. I have appeard on local radio and television programs as an expert in landlord tenant law and have been quoted in several articles in US News and World Report. I have been married to Michele since 1985 and have two adult children. I love to play sports including softball and golf and enjoy traveling and cruising.
I have always been passionate about helping others. Throughout law school I found my passion for criminal law while working at the Metro Conflict Defender's Office taking on complex felony cases. I opened my own firm, The Law Office of Jennifer Anne Magruder, LLC in November 2018 specializing in criminal and immigration law. I fight hard for all my clients and it goes unnoticed! In a JAM? Call JAM Law now!
I grew up in Toledo, Ohio. I knew from when I was young I wanted to be an attorney. I received bachelor degrees from Miami (OH) University in 1998, graduating cum laude. I then went on to attend law school at Wake Forest University School of Law where I earned my Juris Doctor in 2001. Shortly after graduating law school, I passed the Georgia Bar and began my career.. I have been practicing law continuously since 2001. During the first 14½ years my practice was focused on representing companies and insurers in personal injury actions. My specialty was defending truck drivers, motor carriers, and their insurers. For the most part, I enjoyed the legal work but the case’s results often left me empty and unfulfilled. When I did my job well, an injured person’s recovery was limited or, in some cases, eliminated. I needed to make a change, and I did. In 2015, I transformed my practice. Instead of representing companies and insurers, I changed to filing lawsuits against them. I enjoy being part of the solution instead of one of the many obstacles standing between the injured person and their just compensation.. When I am not practicing law, I can be found in Alpharetta spending time with my wife and two kids. My weekends are spent on soccer fields and/or basketball courts. If I am not with my family, I am likely cheering on my beloved Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Cleveland Guardians.
I discovered my passion for family law while taking upper-level psychology courses as a part of my undergraduate studies. These courses often focused on interpersonal relationships and the post-effects of divorce. My practice areas include divorce, separation, custody, child support, legitimation and prenuptial agreements.. As a product of metro-Atlanta, I earned my J.D. degree from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School. I earned my bachelor's degree in Psychology and minor in Political Science at Georgia State University.. Following my admission to the Georgia Bar, I worked at a large law firm with a concentration on Father's rights that is recognized nationwide. There, I spent years litigating divorce, contempt, custody, and legitimation matters throughout the metro-Atlanta area and other surrounding North Georgia counties. I pride myself on being an attorney who believes in empathy and fairness.. Please call me at if you would like to discuss your case.
I began practicing family law while still a student in Seton Hall University Law School in New Jersey and found that I loved it. Family law is challenging and each case is very different from the next and presents its own unique issues and strategy. From that first divorce in law school, I have continued to practice family and divorce law exclusively.
I am a trial lawyer who represents individuals who have suffered injuries or death because of the negligent acts or omissions of others. I pursue claims arising out of car accidents, truck accidents, and slip/trip and falls.. I was named as a Rising Star for 2013, 2014, and 2015 by Georgia SuperLawyers. I have been named as a Super Lawyer every year since 2016 by Georgia SuperLawyers. Only 2.5% of Georgia lawyers are chosen for this honor. I was also named as one of Georgia Trend Magazine's "2013 Legal Elite.". Before opening Horst | Shewmaker, I worked for the largest personal injury law firm in the world. Prior to that, I spent more than four years at a small personal injury firm representing injured individuals through trial. I also spent more than seven years with two large Atlanta firms defending insurance companies, trucking companies, and other corporations against personal injury and wrongful death claims. I have extensive experience in dealing with insurance companies and understanding how they work to prevent individuals from recovering compensation for legitimate injuries. My time spent defending these claims gave me a unique appreciation for how motor vehicle wrecks and other incidents impact individuals and their families, and helps me achieve the best result for my clients.
I am a personal injury lawyer helping clients in the state of Georgia. I grew up in Gainesville, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia for undergradute and law school. I am married and have 4 children. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and help you with your case.

I am a civil trial attorney with a long track record of accomplishments. I was admitted in Georgia in 2000 and in New York in 1974. I am a retired FBI Agent (1973-2002) and peer-rated AV-Preeminent by Martindale Hubbell.. The focus of my practice is Business Litigation including ownership disputes, fraud, employee/officer/director misconduct, breach of contract, vendor disputes and trade secret misappropriation.. In addition, I have a history of forming or joining highly capable teams of litigators from around the country when appropriate to deal with the more complex matters, successfully investigating and building class action cases and federal False Claims/Qui Tam whistle-blower actions, and then successfully resolving them.

For twenty years, I worked for a well-respected Atlanta law firm practicing insurance defense law. In 2013, I began exclusively representing injured people against insurance companies and other people and companies that negligently caused injuries and damages. My experience handling cases for insurance companies provides an excellent background for now representing injured clients. I provide all clients with my personal cell phone number so they can reach me any time. I have tried and won cases in Georgia state and federal courts - including cases where millions of dollars were at stake - and I have argued cases to the Georgia Court of Appeals and Georgia Supreme Court.. I have been married for twenty-one years and have two teenaged children, one of whom is a sophomore at The University of Georgia and the other is a Junior in high school. I coached them both in basketball for over ten years. I previously served as a Board Member on the Alpharetta High School Dugout Club, which is the baseball organizing and booster club for the high school.
