My primary area of practice involves construction disputes. I am an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association’s Construction Arbitrator Panel, a member of the American Bar Association's Forum on Construction Law, Iowa State Bar Association’s Construction Law Section, the firm’s Construction Law Practice Group, and various residential and commercial construction trade associations.. I have handled a wide variety of disputes, such as personal injury, insurance, business, agricultural, banking, and commercial disputes.. Prior to joining the firm in 2001, I worked for two years as a judicial law clerk to Judge Harold Vietor of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa.

I began my practice at Whitfield & Eddy in 1991. Since that time, my practice has focused on civil trial work, concentrating primarily on product liability defense and insurance coverage and related commercial and construction issues.. I have worked on numerous appellate cases in the Iowa Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals.. In addition to writing numerous articles about trial, product liability, and insurance coverage issues, I worked on appellate briefing in the 6th and 10th Circuits and the United States Supreme Court.

I am the chairperson of the Whitfield & Eddy Law Insurance Law Practice Group and my practice primarily consists of defending cases involving claims against individuals, insurance carriers, businesses, and financial institutions.  Throughout my career, I have tried dozens of cases.  I am licensed to practice in all state and federal courts in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, as well as the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.. Given my level of jury trial experience, I was elected into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), a national invitation-only organization for lawyers requiring significant jury trial experience as a qualification for membership.  I am the Immediate Past President of the Iowa Chapter of ABOTA.  In addition to ABOTA, I am an active member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC), a peer-selected organization composed of leaders in the legal defense community who have achieved professional distinction.  I have also been named a Fellow in the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, an organization limited to 250 of the most experienced trial lawyers in the State of Iowa.  I am have been rated by Martindale-Hubbell at the AV (highest) level for legal ethics and ability.. In addition to my courtroom experience, I am well-versed in representing clients who need alternative dispute resolution, including mediations and arbitrations.  I have likewise prosecuted and defended numerous cases on appeal.
