Robert DeCurtins has lived in Charlotte since 1984 where he and his wife have raised their three children and he began his legal career.  Over the past 25 years he has successfully represented many thousands of clients in state criminal court in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and nearby counties.  He enjoys his relationships with his clients, past and present, and looks forward to getting to know his future clients.. Robert was born in Miami Beach, Florida on March 20, 1954, and grew up in Dayton, Ohio .  He attended college at Eastern Kentucky University where he graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology.. His first job out of college was with Montgomery Ward as a security director for a new location.  Responsibilities included hiring and training a staff of store detectives to apprehend shoplifters and all internal investigations of employee theft and embezzlement.. While working in that capacity Robert was introduced to the field of polygraph (or lie detector) and later graduated from the Lincoln Zonn Institute of Polygraph in Miami, Florida where he graduated 2nd in his class, which consisted mostly of police officers from around the country.  He was hired by the Zonn Security Corporation upon graduation and trained in New York city for a period of time under a nationally renowned polygraph examiner and interrogator who had conducted polygraph testing on witnesses surrounding the President Kennedy assassination.. Eventually, Robert accepted a position in Dayton, Ohio with Takkon Polygraph Firm which was owned and operated by Dayton Police Department homicide investigators and was the largest private firm in the Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana area.  While there he testified in criminal court as a polygraph expert.  Robert believes his polygraph and interrogation experience has been invaluable in his career as a criminal defense lawyer, having personally conducted approximately 8,000 polygraph examinations.  He also was eventually granted a state license to administer polygraphs in North Carolina .  Robert is possibly the only lawyer in North Carolina to have held such a license.. With an educational and job background in the criminal justice area, Robert began law school at the University of Dayton School of Law in 1980, obtaining his law degree in 1983.  Mr. DeCurtins then moved his family to Charlotte, North Carolina and began his legal career as an Assistant Public Defender.  In 1985 he left that office and went into private law practice.  At that time, Mr. DeCurtins helped prosecute child support arrearage cases in Charlotte .  In addition, he also represented the City’s interest in front of the Civil Service Board where his job was to have the board uphold punishments, i.e. suspensions or termination, handed down by the Charlotte Police Department for officer misconduct.. In 2018, he overturned a 50-year murder sentence based on the ineffective assistance of the client’s trial lawyer, and overturned another conviction on direct appeal where the client had not been properly advised of his rights to counsel. He obtained a 100-month sentence reduction on remand for another State client, and obtained a remand for resentencing from the Fourth Circuit for a 2-year reduction for another client. (read more). He has a number of other exciting appellate challenges working their way through the courts including a habeas corpus challenge to the immigration detention policies in North Carolina, where the ACLU and Just Futures have joined the litigation, as well as a First Amendment challenge to our jury intimidation statute in which renowned legal blogger Eugene Volokh is arguing with Mr. Heroy. The last case involves the defense of an attorney where Rob is challenging her conviction based on arbitrary enforcement by federal law enforcement. In this case and dozens of other cases, he is the lawyer that lawyers call when they need assistance, either with criminal charges or investigations or with disciplinary proceedings.. Rob also litigates immigration matters in federal district court and federal courts of appeal. In some cases, he has obtained court orders compelling immigration to grant relief to individuals or release them from detention, and in others he has obtained relief by appealing arbitrary immigration decisions to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Elizabeth graduated from the Charlotte School of Law magna cum laude, ranked third in her class. While a law student, she served as a legal intern for both the Office of Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service and the Western North Carolina Low Income Taxpayer Clinic through Legal Services of Southern Piedmont.  Elizabeth also participated in the Pro Bono Wills Clinic and earned Pro Bono Leadership Awards from the North Carolina Bar Association and Charlotte School of Law for her work with Wills for Heroes and the Mecklenburg County Self-Serve Center. In addition to earning awards for the top grades in both of her legal research and writing courses as well as classes in elder law and federal income tax, Elizabeth was a research assistant for Professor Camille Davidson, a member of an award-winning Moot Court team, and Senior Editor of the Charlotte Law Review, which published her casenote, “A Post-Ahlborn Analysis of the Supreme Court of North Carolina’s Decision in Andrews v. Haygood.” The position of this casenote was adopted in 2012 by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in E.M.A. ex rel. Plyler v. Cansler. After earning her Juris Doctor degree and passing both the North and South Carolina bar examinations, Elizabeth completed her legal training by earning a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Taxation from the prestigious graduate tax program at the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law. Even before earning a J.D. and LL.M., Elizabeth knew that her legal career would focus on trusts and estates. Growing up in her mother’s law firm, she learned first-hand how rewarding a career in estate planning and administration can be both personally and professionally. Her academic and professional experiences have only strengthened her enthusiasm for this area of the law, and she looks forward to sharing this passion with her clients.

John grew up in Charlotte attending High School here and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC 1982) where he majored in Political Science and Criminal Justice. He played on the Varsity Soccer team for UNCC. After College, John worked for a year as a Fire Tech for a alarm company before going to law school. He has been successful securing handicapped accessible housing and transportation for his clients when the insurance companies denied those rights to his clients.  He also has extensive experience representing those with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or Reflex Sympathetic Disorder (RSD) and knows how to get clients specialized medical treatment for such clients.
