After graduation from Emory University in 1973, Rick began his professional practice in Decatur, Georgia in 1973.  His practice was wide an varied.  While in Georgia his practice concentrated on family law, but he represented clients in many aspects of civil law, including representing small and medium size corporations, car racing engine builders and race car fabricators, contract litigation, specialized litigation under federal law assisting blind people with food service programs, and persons accused of white collar crimes.  In 1998, he received an AV® Preeminent ™ rated attorney with Martindale Hubbell.. In 1998 Rick and his family moved to the Four Corners area of Colorado where he limited his practice to real state and land use law, representation of a local nursing home and a local bank.  In 2001, he accepted a position in the trial division with the Supreme Court of Colorado Office of Attorney Regulation and moved to Denver, Colorado.  His practice consisted of prosecution of attorneys who committed various ethics rules..
