Mr. Vald has earned certification as a mediator through the Polk County Bar Association District Court Mediation Program. As a trained and certified mediator, Mr. Vald has experience in helping parties to resolve difficult divorce and domestic relations issues. I was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1961. I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, where I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned my Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice in 1983. I then moved to Des Moines, Iowa. I attended Drake University Law School, earning My Juris Doctorate Degree in 1987. While there, I was awarded the Dean's Service Award as Honor Board Chief Justice, and the Presidential Award for Outstanding Service to the Law School. I have practiced law for the last 27 years. I practice in the area's of criminal law and personal injury law. I am a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, the American association for Justice, The Iowa Association for Justice, the American Bar Association, and I am on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.. I have handled almost every type of Criminal case including murder,robbery,burglary,. vehicular homicide,felony and misdemeanor drug charges as well as sex offender charges. I have handled well in excess of 1,000 drunk driving cases.. My clients tell me that the thing they like the most about me besides my experience is my accesibility. I came into the practice of law after studying for six years to be a Catholic priest, after which I spent 10 years traveling all over the Unites States and Mexico, to Europe, and to Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and iNdia. During this time, I got to live with people from all walks of life, from poor to rich, and with people of many different religions. While on the road, I was preaching Christianity, but it was a Christianity based on the fact that we are all brothers and isters, of One Family, and that we need to love and care for each other, and for our world in general.. At the end of this 10 years, I went through some expereinces that led directly to my entry into law school. Sicne becoming a lawyer, I have had the privilege of defending many persons, both in immigration court and in criminal court. I have developed a law practice focused on family immigrant and deportation defense, with a specialty in criminal deportatioin defense. I have given many Continuing Legal Education seminars to alwyers on this area of the law for many years.. I was adjusnct professor in immigration law for Drake Law School from 1997 to 2004. our law office also led the response to the big ICE immigraiton raid in Postville in 2008. I continue my law practice here in Iowa, with my focus now bering the reunification of families while continuing to work in the area of immigration deportation. I enjoy my pracitce and my clients.
