I grew up in San Antonio, TX.  I graduated from Boston University in 1996 with a degree in Economics.  I then went to law school at the University of Miami and graduated in 1999.  I have been practicing law since 1999 and I have been mediating since 2006.  I am fluent in Spanish and Haitian Creole.  I am conversant in Hebrew and French.  My practice is focused on ALL types of accidents and injuries.  I only represent plaintiffs.  I also enjoy my work as a mediator.  To my knowledge, I am the only worker's compensation mediator in the State of Florida who is fluent in Haitian Creole.  I also serve on the Board of Directors of the Florida Workers' Advocates (a statewide organization of attorneys who represent injured workers and who advocate to improve the workers' compensation system in favor of injured workers.. I am currently the Florida State Delegate for The National College for DUI Defense. I have lectured on DUI issues in Florida, and out of state about Florida’s breath testing machine to blood testing in DUI cases.  My clients have included lawyers, police officers, pro athletes, political figures, business executives, entertainers and just plain folks. I attended Nova Southeastern Law School, where I graduated near the top of my class in 1981. I am the founder of Alan S. Bernstein P.A., with offices in both Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. I am the Florida State Delegate for The National College for DUI Defense, as well as being a faculty member of the college. I am also a founding member of The DUI Defense Lawyers Association. I has completed courses on the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. I have received training as an Intoxilyzer 5000 and Intoxilyzer 8000 series Operator and Maintenance technician through C.E.S. Consulting and The Florida Department of Law Enforcement. I am a highly trained attorney in the area of alcohol-related DUI, and the growing area of DUI drug cases. I have taught other attorneys on the use, theory and law on the Intoxilyzer, in addition to lecturing at the National College for DUI Defense. I have often been involved in large-scale challenges to DUI chemical testing, investigative methods and Field Sobriety Testing. I was on the team that attacked the Field Sobriety Tests that led to the seminal decision in State v. Meador, 674 So.2d 826 (Fla. 4th DCA 1996). I have worked hard to have earned a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and highly skilled DUI attorneys in Florida. My opinion is sought by DUI attorneys throughout South Florida. After graduating from the Marshall-Wythe School of law at the College of William & Mary, I clerked for the Honorable Pamela B. Minzner in New Mexico. I then entered private practice in Florida in 1992 and have litigated primarily in state courts, including appeals.  I have been a certified mediator since 1997 and am now certified in circuit civil, appellate, family and county court mediation.   I am the Vice President of the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators, and edited their newsletter, The Caucus.. I am also a qualified arbitrator for state court matters.  I am a FINRA arbitrator and chair-qualified and have arbitrated hundreds of cases, mainly as chairperson.  I am also a Special Magistrate for the Broward County Value Adjustment Board.  I also serve as an arbitrator for the American Health Law Association.. Aside from my legal and dispute resolution experience, I am the race director and coach for Synergy Outdoor Adventure Resources, a nonprofit that fosters participation in outdoor recreation and competition including paddlesports and adventure racing.  We and the team we sponsor support the Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre, which has been serving South Florida communities for almost 60 years.   I wrote Blazing Paddles: Your Guide to Forming a Fun, Fast Dragon Boat Team, the highest rated book of its kind on Amazon.
