I am a trial lawyer with the experience, skills, and demeanor to win your case. Born in Augusta, Georgia, I am the only son born to a family physician and a psychiatric social worker. I have lived the majority of my life in Louisville, Kentucky, my chosen hometown, after being educated in the public schools of South Carolina, and graduating from Furman University. Since living here I earned a M.Div. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a law degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville.. My legal training began before I started law school when I served as a pastoral counselor, chaplain, therapist, pastor and social worker in a variety of settings. Having the opportunity to work with clients who were required to go to court introduced me to the legal system, where I quickly discerned that I could do what lawyers and judges do, and do it better than the ones I saw. I also gained invaluable experience working with a wide variety of people in different life stages facing a wide spectrum of problems.. While in law school, I clerked for the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, and later served in their Family Court unit. Upon graduation, I became an Assistant County Attorney, where I nurtured and honed my love of justice. For seventeen years, I prosecuted a broad spectrum of criminal cases, from sex offenses to guns, drugs, and DUI’s. During my full-time service as a prosecutor, I maintained a family law practice in which I handled a wide variety of divorce and post-divorce matters. I also worked part-time for, and learned from, some of the best personal injury trial attorneys in this state. To date, I tried 101 cases and written 51 appeals. That is more trial experience than most lawyers accumulate in two lifetimes.. Shortly after making the decision to enter private practice, I was invited to join two of my best friends, Maria Fernandez, who has been my family’s attorney for 20 years, and Doug Haynes, who was one of my professors in law school, to join their practice. Doing work you love with people you love is a great gift.. I have accumulated a successful and impressive track record. I have personally resolved thousands of cases ranging from six figure personal injury car wrecks to divorce and post-divorce matters to criminal cases. I have tried real cases in front of real juries in Kentucky. Most of the lawyers who advertise have never stepped inside a courthouse and tried a case in front of a jury. How can you expect your case to be taken seriously when the lawyer you hired has never demonstrated he is a legitimate opponent?. I have repeatedly demonstrated that I have the skills and knowledge to successfully handle the cases I pursue, and I have consistently demonstrated the ability to obtain impressive results. When dealing with an opponent, you can bet that I will be aggressive, relentless and zealous. However, I am guided by a sense of fair play, and I will maintain courtesy, civility, and respect for the opposing side, regardless of our disagreement. I take pride in my standing in the legal, professional, business and civic communities, and I will keep promises and commitments.. Although my primary office is located in Louisville, Kentucky, I travel throughout the state of Kentucky, and I have represented clients in courtrooms throughout the state.. We have carefully assembled a team that is second to none. We value excellence, personal service and value. We enjoy a positive work environment and function as a cohesive and confident team, which helps us obtain winning results for you on a consistent and cost-efficient basis.. I am the husband of Michelle, and father to a son and two daughters: Braden, Brevin and Brenna. In my spare time, I enjoy my family and friends. Shelly and I spend a staggering amount of time transporting our children to scholastic and athletic events. I enjoy running and biking, and raising the community’s awareness of pancreatic cancer…my wife is a pancreatic cancer survivor. I look forward to however we may cross paths in the community.

I graduated from Bardstown High School in 1990 then moved to Louisville to obtain my undergraduate degree from Bellarmine University (formerly Bellarmine College). I graduated with honors in 1994 with a BA in philosophy and economics, shortly thereafter pursuing my juris doctorate degree at the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville.. After graduating law school and passing the Bar in 1998, I was hired where I clerked: Tilford, Dobbins, Alexander, Buckaway & Black, where I was exposed to multiple areas of the law: real estate; contracts; family law; workers' compensation; and civil litigation. The bulk of my time there was devoted to workers' compensation defense.. In 1999, I married my high school sweetheart, and moved back to Nelson County where we now reside with our two teenage sons.. Since 2003, I have practiced law with Bradley D. Harville. Mr. Harville has been a great professional mentor and role model. Hans was raised in Savannah, Georgia. At age fifteen, he and his family moved to Kentucky to be closer to his mother’s family. Hans majored in finance and minored in philosophy while at the University of Louisville. He worked his way through college while working third-shift part time at United Parcel Service. Quickly promoted several times, by his senior year he had advanced to a full-time position as a financial analyst in United Parcel Service’s Air Group where he analyzed past aircraft fleet maintenance expenditures in order to make projections for the future.. While he certainly enjoyed putting his finance degree to work, Hans had already made plans to attend law school on scholarship. Law school was a natural fit for him and he made the Dean’s list all six semesters while at The Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. During his second year, Hans was selected to be a member of the Brandeis Journal of Family Law. Also in his second year, Hans advanced to the semi-final round of the Pirtle-Washer Oral Advocacy Competition and tied for third with the woman whom he would later marry, Jeri Barclay. During his final year, Hans was selected to represent the law school at the prestigious Kauffman Securities Law Moot Court Competition in New York City. He and his teammate-and still good friend-Shane O’Bryan, made the best showing in the law school’s history by finishing third in the nation. Hans finished law school ranked in the top ten with a grade point average high enough to gain him membership into the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Additionally, Hans was asked to join the most prestigious honor society at the Brandeis School of Law, the Brandeis Society.. Following graduation, Hans went to work for the small, well-respected plaintiff personal injury law firm where he had clerked during law school. Just two weeks after receiving his bar results, Hans, and the attorney with whom he worked, successfully tried a two-week medical malpractice case. He was hooked on trial work from that moment forward. Since then, he has been involved in a number of large jury verdicts and settlements, including serving as co-counsel on a $25,700,000 settlement arising out of childhood sexual abuse (this settlement consolidated 243 indivdual lawsuits alleging childhood sexual abuse against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville and was settled in 2003. At the time, it was the second largest settlement against a diocese in US History.) To learn more about the case, you can read the Courier Journal Newspaper article here.. At only thirty-years of age, Hans made the decision to start his own firm. The dynamic success of The Poppe Law Firm comes as no surprise to anyone who knows Hans. He is passionate about the work he does and the people and small businesses he represents. Because of this, he chooses to limit his caseload to only twenty cases at any given time. This ensures he can give each of his clients the personal attention they need and deserve.

For me, it is pretty simple. You have been in an automobile or motorcycle accident and you are facing questions that you never expected. These may include:. When I have questions, I want answers. If I am paying an attorney a portion of personal injury settlement, I expect answers. I make it simple. My cell phone is.. I use my cell phone so I am available to my clients. Why? Because my clients are the ones going through this stressful event and a five minute phone call can make all the difference in the world. Yes you might catch me in the car or with the kids screaming in the background but, unlike most attorneys you can catch me.. You have questions and I do this kind of work every day. I have done it for over 20 years. Nevertheless, I would suggest you judge for yourself. Pick up the phone and call me. You will deal directly with me, not a paralegal or an answering service.. My phone number is and I am waiting for your call.
