Tom Hoffner concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning, deferred compensation, employee benefits, and business succession law. Tom has experience in the preparation and implementation of wills, revocable trusts, irrevocable life insurance and gift trusts, charitable trusts, family limited partnerships, marital property agreements, powers of attorney and other estate planning techniques. He also has been involved in structuring and implementing deferred compensation plans and programs for a variety of organizations, as well as various other employee benefit plans.

I believe children’s needs and interests are paramount.  I have three young children and understand the importance of maintaining stability in the midst of change.  Parents put their children’s needs before their own during marriage. I encourage clients to keep their children’s needs and interests at the forefront as a part of the divorce process as well. Since the parents are divorcing, and not the children, I urge clients to isolate the children from the conflict to the greatest extent possible.. My accomplishments have not gone unnoticed.  My peers have named me a “Wisconsin Super Lawyer” in the area of Family Law.  I have also been elected to the Board of Directors for the State Bar Family Law Section.  I am a fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the preeminent organization of Family Law lawyers in the nation. My dedication to law extends beyond my practice.  I have presented seminars to fellow lawyers and judges, written proposed legislation, and testified before legislative committees on family law matters.  I also offer mediation services.

I have long been a strong advocate for children. Before attending law school, I was a social worker for the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare. Now as an attorney, I help families involved in divorce and paternity proceedings, grandparent and foster parent rights cases, and in complicated CHIPS and termination of parental rights matters. I also serve as a mediator, as well as a guardian ad litem, representing the best interest of children. In all cases, I seek creative solutions that work for families and protect children’s rights.

I bring an accounting background to the practice of law, allowing me to counsel my clients regarding their legal needs with an eye toward tax planning.. I take great pride in building and maintaining strong client relationships, based on service and trust. Together, my father, Jay W. Winter, and I served the legal needs of Oregon and Madison-area families from one generation to the next. In 2013, Winter Law Office merged with The Law Center for Children & Families, forming The Law Center, S.C. As a result of the merger, the firm is able to serve more of its clients’ diverse legal needs, while continuing a tradition of long-term, personal client relationships.

Emily is a persistent and compassionate advocate for our clients. She strives to be creative and pragmatic in her work on behalf of children and families. She has a special interest in helping immigrant children and LGBTQ families. She was the lead attorney in a 2014 appeal in Wisconsin about applying the marital presumption of parentage to married same-sex couples post-marriage equality. She represents children and families all over the world in immigration, adoption, and assisted reproduction matters.
