I am an Arizona native and began my legal career with Udall Shumway PLC more than 39 years ago.  I  devote  my  practice to family law, guardianship, conservatorship and probate matters.. -. I am an Arizona State Bar Certified Family Law Specialist and have practiced in this area of law for more than 39 years.  I routinely handle matters involving all aspects of child custody, paternity, relocation and interstate custody issues under the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA), child and spousal support issues, cases with issues of complex valuation and division of property, assets and debts.. -. I currently serve as a judge pro tem for the Arizona Superior Court in Maricopa County, primarily in family law cases.  As an adjunct to my responsibilities as a judge pro tem, I have served as a settlement judge for the Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) office of the Maricopa County Superior Court.. -. Guardianship and Conservatorship. -. I also practice in the area of guardianships and conservatorships for minors and adults. This includes initiating the proceeding, complying with annual court filings, litigation issues and termination.  Because of my experience as a probate and trial attorney, I am often asked to assist in these types of cases when litigation is required.

Licensed in the Federal Courts for the District of Arizona and the Western District of Oklahoma, as well as the United States Courts of Appeal for the 8th, 9th and 10th Circuits.  Finally, licensed in the U.S. Supreme Court.

I joined Udall Shumway in 1987 and currently head the firm’s Transactional and Estate Planning Group. I completed  my undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University where, in 1980, I received a B.S. in Accounting with a minor in English. I am a Certified Public Accountant (Texas, 1982). I received my Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in 1987. During law school, I was a Member (1985-86) and Editor-in-Chief (1986-87) of the BYU Journal of Public Law. Prior to law school, I worked with an international accounting firm and with the corporate accounting group of a Fortune 500 company.. -. Since joining the firm, I have used my tax and accounting background to good advantage. My practice focuses on business formation, purchases and sales of business assets and interests, loan documentation and financing arrangements, business succession planning, security arrangements, purchases, sales and leases of commercial property and business dissolution. I also assists clients with tax planning for large estates and routinely provide tax and business planning advice in such diverse areas as probate, marital dissolution, deferred compensation and dispute resolution.. -. I am licensed to practice in the courts of the State of Arizona, the Federal District Court of Arizona, and the United States Tax Court. I am currently a member of the State Bar of Arizona and the East Valley Bar Association. I am also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. I am actively involved in the community and am, or have been, a member of the Mesa Museum & Cultural Advisory Board, Maricopa Association of Governments Blue Ribbon Committee on Regional Growth, Mesa Arts & Entertainment Alliance Committee, Mesa Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors, Mesa Baseline Rotary, and Arizona Regional Medical Center.  I am also a member of the executive committee of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, Phoenix Chapter.

Brent received his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was the case note and comment editor for the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law.. Before opening his office in Mesa in 1996, he was the partner in charge of the estate planning and business immigration practice areas at Brown & Bain P.A. in Phoenix. He is a member of Wealth Counsel, a national collaborative business and estate planning organization; the East Valley Planning Council; and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Maricopa County Bar Foundation and other charitable organizations. He is currently on the Professional Advisory Board of the Arizona Community Foundation.. He has been very active as a leader in various capacities with the Boy Scouts of America and has coached several youth sports teams.
