I have been working in law firms since 2005 and have worked in fields such as workers' compensation, family law, civil defense litigation, and personal injury. I majored in legal studies while also obtaining my paralegal certificate in undergrad which allowed me to start working in the legal field during college. Being a paralegal for many years gave me a solid foundation of how to work a case from start to finish and the ability to manage all aspects of a case. It also gave me perspective on how to anticipate the needs of an attorney handling a case and also how to manage and supervise other support staff.
I have been representing people with disabilities for 30 years, my entire legal career. My grandfather had a severe disability, and I was raised witnessing how hard life can be when living with disabilities. I understand what you are going through.. My firm provides personalize representation. We are not part of the mass marketing, grab every client mentality found in many of the TV advertising firms. We are a small firm, and will get to know you as our client. We do not treat you as just a number or another case. When you call me, you talk to me. We return all phone calls, something which is lacking in today’s firms.. When we discuss your case, I will always tell you when it is, and when it is not in your best interest to hire a lawyer. Contrary to what TV advertisers tell you, sometimes you just don’t need to hire and pay an attorney. Some disabilities are so severe, they will automatically entitle you to benefits. Some people are in favorable age groups (over 50) which makes them more likely to get benefits based on their application, without having to pay an attorney. If I tell you not to hire anyone, I will spend the time with you to discuss your case, and provide you with the information you need to file your application on your own, and be available to answer your questions.. Our representation will not end if we get an unfavorable decision at your hearing. We will take your case to the Social Security Appeals Counsel, and to the District Court if appropriate. Before you hire an attorney, be sure to ask them if they will take your case to District Court if you lose. Most representatives will not file these appeals.. I have offices in both Minnesota and Arizona. Most think this means I winter in Phoenix, and spend summers in Minnesota. Actually, my time is split equally between my two offices each month. You can always reach me, no matter which office I am in.. When not working, I enjoy spending time with my life and law partner Dennis Peterson. We enjoy traveling, gardening, volunteering and being home handymen.

I grew up in a family where my father came from a very poor family of 9 children and my mother grew up in a family of 5 children. Both of them grew up in Crosby Ironton, Minnesota. Dad was so poor that the brothers had to loan their shoes and clothes to the other siblings in order to go to school. Dad saw many of the fathers of his school friends lose their lives when the mines they were working in collapsed. From that point on, he became an active advocate for the underdog and never stopped. He taught us kids to be compassionate and advocate for the families that had bad luck or less opportunities because they were poor. I had no choice but be inspired to advocate for others.. When I graduated from the U of M, women were encouraged to choose teaching, nursing and or secretarial work. I graduated from the College of Education, but longed to be a lawyer that at that time was not an acceptable choice for a woman. After the birth of my third child, women were enrolling in law school in waves. I was thrilled to join the wave and started my first year at Hamline Law School when my youngest, was 6 months old.. I graduated from law school in 1980 and after clerking in Bankruptcy Court and working in Real Estate, I started my own law firm in 1993 practicing in the area of personal injury. I have loved my life as a lawyer. I have enjoyed working with a group of terrific co-workers who have become wonderful friends. My clients will testify, that I fight very hard for them and always try to obtain the best result possible. I am most fortunate to have these opportunities.
I grew up in a family business. From an early age, I learned about the challenges of owning and operating business — how to provide a quality service, how to connect with potential customers, how to resolve disputes, and how to build relationships — with both internal and external customers. Having practiced law for 20 years, I help businesses succeed. Simply put, I find meaning in seeing my clients’ businesses thrive. I believe strongly in the benefits of getting ahead of the curve. By anticipating issues, I seek to walk with my clients. I believe in ethics, in being true to your values and in the benefits of developing good business practices. Some people like to drive their cars on the ice in March. I don’t. By being strategic, businesses can succeed — sometimes beyond their wildest expectations — and can do so without walking on thin ice.
I graduated from law school in 2004 and have spent nearly every day since then in court. Whether that was as a judge's clerk, a prosecutor, a defense attorney ... and as a defendant. I am not a perfect person. I have made mistakes in my life ... made poor decisions ... and I have had to rely on others (including a lawyer) to help me navigate those difficult times. I also needed to come to terms with a chemical dependency problem that was causing harm to myself and others. Gratefully, I found a program that works and, after turning myself over to the care of a power greater than myself. I have begun the long (and rewarding) process of making a daily amends to those that I hurt --- primarily by not returning to old/bad habits and by embracing a commitment to rigorous honesty ... something that allows me to live life (and its ups and downs) on life's terms. I am not a magician. But, I do believe that I have the personal and professional experience necessary to advise you about when it comes to what you can/should consider when you or someone you love is facing the sort of problem that might require the hiring of a lawyer. And, if you decide that I am the right attorney for the case --- I will do whatever it takes to help earn the best possible outcome under the circumstances.
I founded Headland Law & Strategy to combine my personal passion for medical and technology-based innovation with my nearly two decades of professional experience in law, intellectual property, business, engineering, strategy and project management.. I have successfully defended employers against wage and hour claims as well as claims involving workplace discrimination; harassment; retaliation; drug and alcohol testing; and breach of contract, including claims involving non-compete and non-solicitation agreements and other common law tort claims. In addition, I was selected to the 2015 Minnesota Rising Stars list, a designation received by no more than 2.5% of attorneys within the state. I grew up in North Dakota and while attending college worked with my father in the construction trade to help pay for tuition, primarily performing roofing and siding work. I earned his Juris Doctor magna cum laude from Hamline University School of Law, where I was both an associate editor of the Hamline Law Review and participant in the American Bar Association Mediation Moot Court. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Cloud State University. After graduating law school, and prior to joining Wessels Sherman, I gained valuable experience working for the Saint Paul City Attorney's Office by successfully representing clients in over 200 administrative proceedings as well as in state court. I also try to maintain a network of referral relationships with other attorneys, accountants and business professionals in order to act either as local counsel, or to provide valuable resources for clients.

I strive not only to get the best results in court for my clients, but to improve their lives as well by helping with any underlying issues that may exist such as addiction/alcoholism, anxiety, depression, anger management and a host of other issues that commonly plague defendants in the criminal justice system.. I am on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. I am also a Life Member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.. I am honored to be named to Super Lawyers annually.. I frequently lecture about trial skills and techniques and criminal defense strategies at law schools and continuing legal educatin seminars. Other criminal defense lawyers frequently call me for advice and even hire me to do their trials. I am also a radio, newspaper and televison commentator - you may have heard me on 93X or KFAN. I enjoy mentoring young lawyers and I feel grateful to protect the accused. If you or a loved one are accused of a crime, you can call me at for a free consultation.
I chose to work at a very small, hands-on law firm in the Twin Cities because I wanted the opportunity to practice my profession and interact with clients, attorneys, and judicial officers. I have learned that the most satisfying aspect of being an attorney is helping individuals who have been taken advantage of and who do not have the ability to protect their own interests. A satisfied client is more rewarding than anything else, to me.
I am qualified as a mediator under Rule 114 of the General Rules of Practice for District Courts
