I opened my own law practice to be able to give individuals the care and attention they and their cases need.  I spent eight years working as an insurance defense attorney, so I know how the other side views your case.  I also know how to fight all the way through trial, a skillset not many attorneys have experience.  Because of my passion and dedication, I cover several areas of law as they often overlap.. I live and work in the city I love, Oakland, California.  I had been doing litigation for 30 years before I went into estate planning and probate.  I enjoy literature and  was Chairman of the Board of the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival for many years.  I voulenteer deliverying meals and food to the less fortunate in Oakland. I'm also concerned about climate change and am involved in Citizens Climate Lobby.  I also try to do my part as a concerned citizen by canvassing door to door during our elections. I have been practicing law in California since January 2000. I began working in government, first as  Deputy County Counsel representing the various agencies of San Joaquin County, followed by a position as Deputy District Attorney in Stockton. I left to start private practice to ulitize my bilingual skills in Spanish due to the lack of attorneys capable of communicating properly with clients in legal matters that could have severe consequences for years after. I have been practicing in the areas of family law and bankruptcy for 20 years. I handle all aspects of family law and only chapters 7 & 13 bankrupcies along with litigation issues. I have extensive trial experience in the family law area and look forward to getting some in the bankruptcy area. I have a gold-star background in commercial contracts, software, intellectual property, real estate and corporate matters. I am an active member of the State Bar of California and the American Immigration Lawyers Association who has advocated for hundreds of asylum applicants and won several defenses to deportation in US immigration courts. I have fout hard to achieve legal immigration status for the most disadvantaged clients, especially those who were victims of domestic violence and other life-threatening crimes.. I grew up in a family that immigrated from Peru, and am a fluent English and Spanish speaker. Long before embarking on my law degree, I  demonstrated my deep commitment to immigrant rights by spending hundreds of hours volunteering as an interpreter for asylum applicants, many of whom were fleeing domestic violence and civil unrest in Central America.. I earned my JD from the University of San Francisco, graduating cum laude and earning prestigious awards and scholarships throughout my academic career. As a law student, I partnered with the UC Hastings Center for Gender and Refugee Studies on a project that involved interviewing experts and witnesses about gender-based violence in Guatemala.
