James was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. In his senior year of high school, his family immigrated to Southern California where he graduated from Temecula Valley High School. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University, James attended The University of New Hampshire School of Law. During law school, James served as an editor for IDEA: The Intellectual Property Law Review and competed in the National Saul Lefkowitz Trademark Moot Court competition in New York City. James also completed a judicial externship for The Honorable Dean D. Pregerson, at the United States District for the Central District of California.
