Contracts are like good neighbor fences: if erected at the outset, there are no hard feelings, i.e., the outline and expectations of the relationship are fairly well defined. Contracts help avoid larger conflicts and disagreements later on. This past year, I was called upon several times to resolve multiple partnership and shareholder disputes, where there was no partnership or shareholder agreement.
