I was born and raised in St. Louis and have spent my legal career fighting for those charged with crimes in the State of Missouri. After graduating from law school, I worked for the Missouri State Public Defender for over 10 years. During that time, I represented hundreds of clients facing charges as low as traffic offenses to as high as murder and everything in between. I started my legal career as a Law Clerk for the Honorable Charles B. Blackmar, a Justice with the Missouri Supreme Court and former professor at St. Louis University School of Law. I went on to practice as a trial attorney for the Commercial Litigation Branch of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. Following this position, I served as a Federal Prosecutor with an emphasis on prosecuting white collar crime, including bank fraud.. After leaving the government, I practiced law at Armstrong, Teasdale, Schlafly & Davis, the third largest law firm in the State of Missouri, where I focused on the areas of commercial litigation, personal injury defense, and white collar criminal defense. I opened my own law firm in 1988.. I attended St. Louis University School of Law where I was the Editor In Chief of the St. Louis University Public Law Review and received the American Jurisprudence Award. I attended college at the University of Missouri St Louis where I graduated Magna Cum Laude and received the Stuart and Evelyn Symington Scholarship Award (former U.S. Senator Stuart Symington).. For over 20 years, I have been a practicing trial attorney. I represent the interests of city governments and the interests of management in all areas of labor and employment law.  My experience includes representation of several Missouri municipalities as well as restaurants, manufacturers, insurance companies, and mass transit companies.  I have litigated before state, federal, and administrative courts throughout the country and I have substantial experience in litigation disputes involving arbitration agreements.

I met with my first client on the couch of my old apartment. The apartment was cheap and gross. I was just out of law school. I had graduated law school during one of the worst legal markets in history. Jobs were scarce and the ones that were available were not very good and did not allow me to get into the courtroom.. I always wanted to represent people with real problems, not review paperwork for businesses trying to add to the bottom line. I decided to start my own firm…in my gross apartment.. That client I met with ended up retaining me as his attorney. He had a custody case and wanted to fight for the right to beinvolved in his son’s life. He didn’t have much money, but I didn’t have much experience. It seemed like a fair deal.. What I did have was motivation and fearlessness. I worked my butt off trying to figure out what I was doing. I worked late every night. I woke up early every morning. I researched the case law. I developed mentors. I called law school friends to ask questions. I attended continuing education conferences.. It was hard. Hard is actually an understatement. Starting a firm from scratch is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Many attorneys that take that road don’t last a year in business. I’m not ashamed to admit a few tears along the way, a lot of frustration, and more awkward, young attorney moments than I can count.. I signed more clients. I made a name for myself. I started trying a lot of cases. You don’t become a good trial attorney sitting on the sidelines watching others practice law. I became very good through “trial and error.” Pun intended. I picked up an award or two. My practice has been built one brick at a time. I don’t tolerate mistakes. I research my cases. I return my clients’ phone calls. I work really hard.. Oh, and that first case I retained….it turned into a three day trial. And we won. My client now has joint custody of his son.

I love what I do for a living.  My job gives me the opportunity to develop genuinely deep connections with my clients and coworkers.  We get to know each other very well and develop a sense of mutual respect.  This systems we employ and the culture we create sustains my office.  It also makes us highly effective at what we do.. Work also gives me the chance to give back to the community by supporting many charities – usually ones that are closely connected to the struggles of our clients.  For instance, we represented the family of a young man who was shot to death outside a nightclub at a prominent St. Louis landmark.  In the course of our work with the surviving family members, we were simply amazed by the sheer capacity for work, love and devotion the victim’s mother demonstrated.  As a single mother, she often worked two or more jobs and lived at or below the poverty line.  Her two boys went to school and grew up in a community that was filled with drugs, violence and family dysfunction.  Yet her strength of character guided those boys to become hard working, educated young men that were raising their own young families.  After the wrongful death case resolved, we donated money to a shelter for school age children that is known as a last stop before prison or death.  The young men and women who come out of this shelter often find themselves with a diploma in their hand, pride in their souls and a spring in their step because society didn’t give up on them.  By supporting the shelter, we felt as if we were helping others have the chance that our victim’s mother gave her son.

I believe it's important and my obligation to ensure the rights of those whose lives have been damaged not only physically but also in economic and extremely personal ways because an individual, a corporation, an insurance company, a government entity, or a hospital disregarded a safety rule and needlessly endangered them. In this belief and effort I have argued before both state and federal courts on behalf of individuals, researched and drafted memoranda in premises, uninsured motorist, trucking, and Section 1983 Civil Rights cases, as well as drafted arguments on Appeal. Most of the cases handled by my office settle. However, the five lawyers in our firm, including my brother and father, are trial lawyers. In combination we have tried over 350 jury trials. When I found out this information, I clearly was wrong in believing it to be covered by a court order from California, thinking the information was told to me in attorney-client privilege..
