I have practiced commercial/business litigation since graduating from BYU law school in 1976. Tried more than 100 jury trials. I love the courtroom. I prepare and trial cases electronically because it increases efficiency and lowers costs. All client documents are scanned and bates-labeled, so that complete chronologies can be prepared. A chronology is vital to understasnding the case and preparation. It, also, allows for designation of trial exhibits and preparation of exhibit lists using the computer rather than hand-sorting and hand-description of exhibits. Exhibits can be annotated electronical for effective trial work, and I use the computer equipment in the courtroom myself: there is no disconnect between the examination and getting the document on the screen for the witness, jury, and judge.. Computer images are used in depositions rather than paper exhibits because of the increased efficiency and the resulting lack of disconnect when depositions, which I always videotape, are played at trial. The talking head and the document can be displayed for the jury, and the bates number assures the jury that the same document marked and used at trial is the one about which the witness is testifying. The images allow a free-ranging deposition rather than one limited the stack of documents on the table.. We have the necessary computer programs to process native-file electronic documents (ESI or electronically stored information). Metadata is essential in many cases. We, also, have the right computer forensic help for imaging and use of client and adverse-party computers.. My longest jury trial lasted ten months, a securities fraud trial with more than 10,000 exhibits marked. It was eash to manage becuase of technology. My largest jury verdict resulted in a judgment of more than $60 million. I have traveled internationally for cases and, of course, all over the United States. Tried cases in many states.. I was an adjunct professor of law at ASU lawschool for two years teaching electronics in the courtroom.. I have done cases on a budget and cases where the amount at issue was such that there was no budget. My fees tend to be less than other lawyers because of the efficience of theĀ  electdronics used for prepartion, management, and trial. I, also, expect the client to help me know where to look for evidence in the field of discovery so I do not have to turn over rocks where there are no worms.. I have an economics degree, which helps in the sorts of cases I try. Cases that generally involve economic and accounting experts. It is easier to prepare an expert or cross the other side's expert if you have background in the subject area.. I have a commercial pilot's license with more than 4,000 hours of flight time, less than 80 hours of which is in single-engine aircraft. I know airplanes, the FARs, and all things aviation, so there is no or very little learning curve when the case is aviation related. I have represented pilots, FBOs, Part 135 operators, and Part 145 repair stations.. I am a trial lawyer. That means I want to try the case. My job is to get the case ready to try and try it, not ready to settle. I am at home in large-document cases involvintg complex legal issues. I prefer the courtroom to the office. Interviews, discovery, and everything pre-trial (office work) is to get me to the courtroom.
