He advocated for criminal defendants as an intern with the Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Washington, and sought to overturn wrongful convictions as a clinic student with the Innocence Project Northwest.  Ryan sharpened his analytical and writing skills as an extern for Justice Charles K. Wiggins of the Washington Supreme Court and as the Associate Editor-in-Chief of Washington Law Review. He also served as a Spanish interpreter for the Immigrant Families Advocacy Project, and helped local youth as the President of Street Youth Legal Advocates of Washington..
