I have been practicing in the area of personal injury for over fifteen years. Although I am experienced in many areas of personal injury law, I devote a substantial portion of my practice to representing individuals who have been the victim of sexual or physical abuse. I have been an attorney at HCMP since 1982, having arrived in Seattle from the boom town of Buffalo, N.Y., following law school and college on the east coast. As dictated by the then prevailing real estate environment, I spent my first seven years dealing primarily with workout and bankruptcy matters. As the real estate sector of the economy improved, I shifted to transactional work, mostly financing transactions and loan syndications.  I have found that, working through some troubled times has given me a great perspective on what's really important when "push comes to shove" in a transaction and, with the recent turn in the economy, my early experience has been a true resource in handling the restructuring and workout of troubled loans and in advising clients in creating effective strategies for realizing on their security. I regularly advise our clients, including a number of financial institutions, in lending, real estate, and related debtor-creditor matters, and supervise attorneys and paralegals providing assistance in the full spectrum of financing and real estate-related areas.. In addition to almost 30 years of experience assisting our clients in addressing their legal concerns, I have spent considerable time working with industry and trade groups in ways that have helped me gain a broader perspective on the issues my clients face on a daily basis. I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, but I have lived in Seattle since 1989.  I graduated with honors from the University of Washington School of Law in 2000.  After a short clerkship in the Washington Court of Appeals, I joined Scott, Kinney & Mack, PLLC, and practiced there for fifteen years. In April 2016, I joined Emerald Law Group.. My primary practice areas are personal injury, primarily motor vehicle accidents, premises liability (slip-and-fall and trip-and-fall injuries), dog bites, and childhood sex abuse.  One of the things I most love about my job is getting to know all sorts of people and learning their stories.

I frequently come into my clients' lives when they are at the end of their rope. The resiliency of the human spirit never ceases to impress me.. I see my role as first, helping clients first to determine their priorities clearly, second, developing a plan to achieve as many priorities as possible, and third, implementing the plan, with modifications as required as the case progresses.. Most cases, family or otherwise, settle. I can do that. But the most skilled negotiator always needs to have a "BATNA": a Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement.  For this reason, some cases go to trial. I can do that too.

I first became a lawyer because, as corny as it might seem, I was enthralled by watching Perry Mason when I was a young boy.  The cool and calm demeanor he exhibited in any situation, his crafty cross examination of witnesses that somehow always led to a confession, and not to mention he won all his cases.  While in law school, I volunteered at local legal clinics to help people with everyday legal issues they face, from workplace discrimination to holding a bad landlord accountable.  It was during this time that I saw what power the law held to help people, to improve people's lives, and to be a "big stick" when necessary.  This is one of the reasons I chose to represent people charged with crimes for a living, because so many of my clients are good people even if they made a mistake.  And the U.S. Constitution requires that everyone accused of a crime be entitled to a zealous defense, someone to protect their rights and challenge the government's authority when necessary.  This is why I do what I do.. As a former prosecuting attorney and Judge Pro Tem, I have the experience and knowledge needed to successfully represent those accused of crimes, whether it is assault, DUI, suspended license, theft, and all other criminal charges.  I also handle hundreds of traffic citations a year with an extremely high success rate.  I regularly attend and speak at seminars on trial advocacy, stay up to date on new developments in my field, and provide all the resources my clients need to get them through the process successfully.   But I also take pride in my client service, keeping clients updated on their cases' progress and informed of all developments.   I am also there 24 hours a day if my clients need a question answered or simply want to discuss their case..
