Isaak is the founder and principal attorney at IMG.. As the only son of an Alaskan long-liner, Isaak spent the majority of his youth baiting hooks in the glacial fed waters of Prince William Sound, the Gulf of Alaska, Cook Inlet, Kodiak, and the Bering Sea.  Isaak’s father, R. Kent Hurst, a respected Valdez high-liner and current tugboat captain in Western Alaska, exposed Isaak to the hardships and dangers of the Alaskan maritime industry.  Because of his maritime upbringing, Isaak gained an intimate knowledge of the issues affecting the Pacific Northwest maritime communities, and now strives to help these communities overcome the legal and regulatory challenges they face.. Isaak’s current list of clients includes shipowners, charterers, shipyards, freight forwarders, offshore oil and gas companies, mining companies, construction companies, and other entities and persons engaged in the maritime and transportation industry.  Isaak is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.  Isaak has three Bachelor of Science degrees (Economics, International Studies, and Political Science), and one Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Utah. Isaak also spent an additional year studying Admiralty Law at the National University of Singapore—one of the world’s leading maritime law programs.. Prior to starting IMG, Isaak worked for maritime law firms in Singapore and Seattle, and worked for one of largest marine insurance brokerages in the world. Isaak also spent five years as a professional skier on the Atomic International Ski Team, and worked for the U.S. Department of State in Almaty, Kazakhstan.  Over the years, Isaak has traveled to over 50 countries and twice competed in the X-Games and World Ski & Snowboarding Championships. Isaak is now happily married and enjoys skiing, surfing, mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, and traveling with his wife and daughter in his free time.

In the last twenty years I have over 60 court appointments as an investigator in guardianship cases (guardian ad litem), and have successfully helped protect vulnerable adults and incapacitated people from exploitation.  I also have the uncommon distinction of several published family law appeals in addition to more usual family law experience.  My colleagues know me as a thorough researcher and conscientious advocate.  The cases that engage me the most involve clients who have been subjected to abuse or exploitation.. As background, I started practice in New York City after excellent college and law school back East, but I wanted to move back here (I grew up in Bellevue when it was a much smaller town).  I did move when my father died suddenly, so I let my Eastern bar memberships go and took two years to help my mother with her "horse nursery" in Enumclaw.  I worked back into law here by clerking for our general trial court in Seattle, then working with other attorneys on a variety of cases, and finally building my own practice gradually.   I find that working one-on-one with clients is very satisfying.

In my real estate practice, I represent local and national developers and lenders in all aspects of acquisition, development, financing, leasing, and disposition for multi-family residential, mixed-use, office, and retail projects - with a focus on creative, cost-efficient results. I create private equity and debt funds for private regional lenders and other real estate-related companies, and assist them on a range of financing transactions. As Cairncross & Hempelmann's Managing Partner, I'm responsible for the day-to-day management of the firm, and supervise administration, finances, technology, and business development.. My deep passion for Seattle and city government led to my appointment by former Mayor Greg Nickels to the Pike Place Market Council, where I currently serve as chair. I am an identical twin (I credit this for my highly developed people-antenna) and lived in Paris for four years (still read French newspapers). Hemingway, with his clarity and mastery of language, will always be one of my favorite authors. And in a guilty pleasure sort of way, I am really enjoying the proliferation of micro-distilleries in the area.

In addition to my workers' compensation law practice, I am a single mother of two boys - now men -- and I enjoy playing classical piano.. I was a piano performance major when I began college and switched to a pre-law major after discovering I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to the world through working as an attorney.  It was at that point, I completely stopped playing the piano.. Twenty-seven years later, I started practicing the piano again and even took up piano lessons again with the intent of competing in International Amateur Piano Competitions.  I was a winner in the Seattle International Piano Competition in 2010 and had the opportunity to perform in Benaroya Hall.  In 2011, I was a quarter-finalist (top 15 out of 100) in the Paris International Piano Competition.  My next competition is again in Paris  scheduled in March 2015.  My favorite piece (at this time) is Chopin's 4th Ballade in f minor.  Some days I can play it better than others.

In 1965 my family founded a manufacturing company in Tukwila and continued to operate it throughout my school years. From that young age, I saw that owning and operating your own business is stressful and requires constant attention, but can also be extremely rewarding.. With family business part of my daily life, it was natural for me to seek a major in business administration. I graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Business Administration focusing on Entrepreneurship and a minor in Political Science.. During the course of my legal education, I realized that businesspersons evolve their practices due to an ever-changing collection of laws and regulations, which can be challenging, and disputes are sometimes inevitable. Having an attorney who understands the inside of a courtroom, as well as the intricacies of owning and managing a business, is a significant advantage.. My daily goal is to be a value-added partner and trusted adviser to my clients. To accomplish this I get to know the inner workings of my clients’ business, their employees, and customers. When an issue arises, I am able to identify the optimal way to achieve a client’s objectives, in light of the stakes involved. Nothing gets me more excited than to see my clients succeed and to know I was able to have a positive impact on their business.. Education. Bar Admissions. Community Engagement. Recent Representative Matters. Reported Cases

I've been a construction lawyer in Seattle since 2004. This area of practice is all about figuring out the best way to work through disputes.  It boils down to using leverage -- in the right way, and at the right time.  And this part comes from knowing all the options. But my goal is to always provide the most practical range of options about what make sense going forward. And of course, what does not make sense.  The key is weeding through the "static," which is true in construction law and in life.. Contracts, liens and bonds (public and private) are at the heart of my practice.   My main goal is to be practical.  Running my own firm lets me be  flexible, and work towards the best solution possible.  It might sound trite but it is true: I think of each client as if he or she were a friend, sitting next to me at a lunch table or at a bar.
