J. Neil Lanzi was born on January 10, 1960 in Baltimore, Maryland and has been practicing law for over twenty-five years. His educational background includes graduating from Calvert Hall High School in 1978 as a member of the National Honor Society. Mr. Lanzi continued his education at Loyola College and graduated in the top 10% of his 1982 graduating class with a B.A. degree in Political Science. While attending Loyola College, Mr. Lanzi lettered on the varsity lacrosse team, served in the student government and was Director of the Student Intramural Program.. After attending the University of Baltimore School of Law, Mr. Lanzi graduated in the top half of his class with a J.D. degree in 1985. While attending law school, Mr. Lanzi had the opportunity to clerk with the law firm of White, Mindel, Clarke & Foard, a highly-regarded Towson law firm. Following graduation, Mr. Lanzi was selected to serve a judicial clerkship with The Honorable Albert P. Close of the Circuit Court for Harford County. Upon the completion of the clerkship, Mr. Lanzi accepted an associate attorney position with the Towson law firm of Seiland & Jednorski, P.A., a general practice law firm where he handled a variety of legal matters from the Summer of 1986 through the Spring of 1992.. In June of 1992, Mr. Lanzi formed the law firm known as Coover & Lanzi, with offices in Towson and Ellicott City. The law practice prospered; however, after finding that the vast majority of clients preferred the Towson office for meetings, Mr. Lanzi established his own practice in Towson on October 15, 1993 and incorporated as a professional association in 1996. Mr. Lanzi has been a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Baltimore County Bar Association since 1986 where he is active in the State, Local Laws and Zoning Committee.

In recogintion of my active participation and leadership ability, The Baltimore County Bar Association elected me to serve on its Executive Council for 10 years, and to serve as its President in 2009. I have also served a term on the Board of Governors of the Maryland State Bar Association.. Giving back to the community rounds out my public persona. I devote time and expertise to the Greater Towson Committee which is dedicated to the revitalization and redevelopment of Towson, Md., my adopted hometown. In January 2011, Chris Corey joined Smith, Gildea & Schmidt as a law clerk and continued working for the firm while he was enrolled in law school. After passing the Maryland Bar Exam, Chris joined the firm as an associate, and he is currently a member of the firm’s Real Estate and Estates and Trusts Groups. David K. Gildea, the managing partner of the firm, practices in the area of real estate development, land use and zoning. Prior to joining Smith, Gildea & Schmidt, LLC, Mr. Schmidt served as Zoning Commissioner (Hearing Officer) of Baltimore County, Maryland. His tenure as Zoning Commissioner for over 13 years (1991-2004) represents the longest period of service of any individual ever in that position. Mr. Schmidt also served on the Baltimore County Board of Appeals for 5 years during the 1980s. All told, he has personally adjudicated over 3,000 cases involving complex land use issues.. Mr. Schmidt is a 1975 graduate of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). He received his J.D. degree from the University of Baltimore. He has extensively lectured regarding land use issues and has authored published articles regarding historic preservation in Maryland and administrative practice. He is also a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and Baltimore County Bar Association, and previously served as a member of the MSBA's Board of Governors.. He is currently a member of the Board of Education for Baltimore County, and served as its President from 2011 through 2014.
