My first trial after graduating law school was a homicide case and we achieved a not guilty verdict. Since then, our firm has achieved innumerable dismissials and acquittals. We have won cases that seem unwinable. We have won cases when clients have confessed to crimes. In one very remarkable case, one of our clients confessed to a crime and pleaded guilty with another lawyer. After coming to us for a second opinion we were able to withdraw his guilty plea, go to trial, and convince a jury of his innocence despite the fact that he confessed his guilt to the police.. We have won every type of case you could imagine. Many of our wins occur even before charges are issued - countless times we are hired immediately after a client is arrested and we are often able to convince prosecutors to drop or reduce the case before charges are ever issued. When we can't beat the case, we are usually able to negotiate a favorable settlement. Myself, and my team, work tirelessly to protect your rights. We take what we do seriously, because lives and freedom are at stake. When you read our reviews you are reading real life stories of people who have had their lives changed for the better, because of their contact with our firm.. I have spent my life working for the underdog and the less fortunate. I come from humble blue-collar roots. I spent ten years driving garbage truck, putting myself through college and law school. During law school, I moved to East Africa and spent a summer representing war crime victims in Eritrea. After law school I have spent every minute of my professional career representing my clients with dilgence and care. If you choose to hire me as your lawyer, you will receive my unwavering committment to handle your case with extraordinary effort.

I represent clients facing serious felony and misdemeanor charges. Throughout my career, I have obtained numerous reductions in charges and outright dismissals. Criminal law is more than just accepting the State's plea deal.. Criminal charges are serious and can have life altering consequences if convicted. A criminal conviction can take away your ability to drive a vehicle, prevent you from owning a firearm, restrict employment, and land you in prison or jail.  Criminal convictions also carry steep fines that can be financially devastating to you and your family.. Oftentimes, clients hire me during the investigation stage of their case before charges are even brought and I have frequently prevented charges from being formally filed.  In the event the State does proceed with formal charges, I will investigate your case fully and discuss with you all possible defense options to give you the best opportunity for success.

I practice as a criminal defense lawyer because I believe that the rights of all depend on the rights of one. As a result, each person's rights must be vigilantly safeguarded against the powers of the state. An unfettered state results in the very tyranny our Founding Fathers sought to protect us against with the Constitution.. I have devoted the last 30 years of my life as an attorney to this pursuit. With the law firm of Walden & Schuster, S.C., I continue to do so for clients just like you throughout the Waukesha County area in a wide variety of criminal defense matters, including DUI, domestic violence, juvenile cases and drug-related charges.. In doing so, I follow a baseline philosophy: effective legal representation depends on individualized services. For that reason, I have intentionally structured my legal practice in order to enable me to focus on you, the individual.. My focus on each individual client enables me to learn the facts that can determine the outcome of your case. It also means I can help you understand the legal options available in your particular case so you can choose from them intelligently and with confidence whatever the circumstances. Your confidence will stem from the knowledge that my experience means I hold a legal judgment that has been tried and tested many, many times, often by situations very similar to the situation now facing you.

I followed my father's footsteps into the law.  As both a Lutheran pastor and a state public defender, he taught my sisters and I first-hand the importance of being a person folks can rely on during some of the hardest times of their lives.. When folks are facing the loss of their freedom, their job, or their family, it can be the scariest time of their lives.  They need a zealous attorney who will stand up for their rights and their dignity, whatever their background.  That is the type of Attorney my father taught me to be.. I am an experienced trial attorney and have a long history of successfully exposing illegal police searches and seizures.  I know how to hold the State to its burden at every stage of a criminal, right through appeals if necessary.. Prior to arriving at Marquette Law School, I attended the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and spent two semesters working as a Parliamentery Special Assistant in the palace of Westminster.. The youngest of four, I was the only one of my siblings born and raised exclusively in Wisconsin, mostly in a small town of Clintonville just West of Green Bay.  I grew up fishing and hunting, and still enjoy those things when I can can get time to do them.  However, I mostly stay in Southeastern Wisconsin now.. Beyond fighting felony cases in state and federal court, filing appeals, and representing parents in custody disputes, I try to spend time traveling with my husband at least a couple times per year.  We also try to see as many Brewers games at Miller Park as time allows.. Mostly, my time is spent helping my clients.  If you have any questions about how I can assist you or someone you care about in dealing with an issue anywhere in the state, please give me a call or stop by my firm's Waukesha office, conveniently located across from the County Courthouse.. We're here to help, when it matters most.

Bricco shows her toughness. From Wisconsin Law Journal Up & Coming Lawyers 2014.. An attorney has to be tough to succeed in indigent defense.. The evidence shows that Katie Bricco, a Waukesha public defender, is tough. She runs marathons, triathlons and half-Ironman competitions, and she plays for the Brew City Bruisers roller derby team.. That toughness has translated to the courtroom, where, after just three years, Bricco has tried six cases. Noteworthy among them is State v. Ingram, a 2013 first-degree intentional homicide trial for which Bricco was co-counsel.. Waukesha County does not have many homicide trials, she said, so the case received a lot of media attention. In the case, Bricco gave an unusual opening statement, in which she portrayed the words and demeanor of a key prosecution witness so the jury would listen to his testimony with skepticism.. Her client was convicted, but Bricco said she learned a lot from the trial.. “We felt at the end of the trial,” she said, “that we presented the best case we could.”. In State v. Hessil, she tried the case by herself. Bricco’s client faced several charges, including misdemeanor resisting an officer.. Her client claimed the arresting officer was antagonistic during the encounter that led to the arrest. Bricco said she did some digging and learned that the officer had similar conduct problems with a previous police department.. She was unable to get that evidence introduced at trial, but the jury still acquitted her client on the most serious charge and found him guilty of two lesser charges. At sentencing, the court revisited the topic of the officer’s behavior and imposed only community service.. “It was the first time I heard ‘not guilty’ when a jury came back, which was a great feeling,” Bricco said. “But also, we got validation. There was an acknowledgement that the officer made poor decisions, and my client made amends through community service and his ability to work. The right thing happened.”. Bricco’s work in the courtroom has left an impression on Judge Donald Hassin.. “She’s an outstanding young lawyer,” he said. “She’s prepared. She’s on time. She knows what she wants to do. And she goes about her business in a very professional manner.”

Brad primarily focuses his practice on criminal defense and criminal appeals. As a former prosecutor specializing in domestic violence, sexual assault, and crimes against children, Brad gained invaluable experience and a deep understanding of the investigative and strategic decision-making processes that come before a criminal charge is ever issued. Brad has seen first-hand the ways in which prosecutors prioritize convictions and quick case resolutions, often at the expense of a thorough, unbiased search for truth and justice. To a career prosecutor, an individual defendant is nothing but the sum of his criminal history.. In addition to his criminal practice, Brad frequently represents victims of domestic violence, stalking, and harassment in seeking restraining orders and injunctions, and defending against retaliatory cross-injunctions.. Brad’s background has taught him that each client is unique and that a holistic and individualized approach to every case is the best way to achieve positive results. No two situations are the same, even for clients who have similar previous convictions. Brad recognizes the importance of knowing the details and nuances of every case and the personal life circumstances of every client. Without these, it is impossible to provide high quality, client-centered representation.
