James received both his B.A. in Political Science and his M.B.A. from the University of Kansas, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.  He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2011.  While in law school, James served as a legal intern in the University of Iowa Clinical Law Program and assisted California’s Habeas Corpus Resource Center in post-conviction capital defense litigation.

I love being a lawyer and helping entrepreneurs, startups, and small and medium sized businesses create amazing companies. I also love practicing law through Venture Legal because it allows me to serve my clients in a unique way using fixed fees, online file sharing, digital billing, and electronic signatures.. My goal is to become a team player inside your company, to provide advice beyond that of just legal advice, to practice what Google® calls Horseback Law, and to try to provide “yes if” answers rather than just answering “no.”. Prior to law school I worked as a recording engineer in Nashville and New York City. When I decided to pursue a law degree to study intellectual property, I chose my hometown law school: The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. I was an editor of the law review, published a paper on “copylefts,” and graduated magna cum laude with an emphasis in Business and Entrepreneurial Law.. In addition to running Venture Legal, I’m the Founder and President of b.Legal Marketing, a marketing firm that helps lawyers develop business, and also a Co-Founder of Edge Up Sports, where geeks are merging big data with fantasy football.
