Hi, I am Margaret Barrett.. I founded Safe Harbor Estate Law to help families protect what is most important to them.  I am motivated by life experiences that help me relate to my clients. My ex-husband died suddenly, leaving our young children and a messy estate that took 7 years to resolve.  My siblings and I worked together to support my parents in my Dad's dementia. My new husband and I crafted a plan to protect each other and all of our children in our blended family when we pass away. Many of my clients experience or want to prepare for the experiences I have already learned from.. My expertise is in helping baby boomers and their parents to acheive their goals while minimizing expenses and hassles.  I create estate plans that protect my clients in case of incapacity during life, and direct their assets while protecting their loved ones after they pass away.. I also ease the burdens of families worried about paying for long term care, by developing personalized plans that take advantage of all the benefits available to them. Finally, after a loved one dies, I handle probate, or estate or trust administration for my clients at a difficult time in their lives.. I enjoy working with my clients' family members whenever it is feasible. My practice is to team up with other professionals on my clients' behalf.  My goal is to develop long lasting relationships with my clients that are mutually satisfying.. I am often asked what an Elder Lawyer does. In my case, my elder law practice includes planning and applying for long term care Medical Assistance and VA benefits so my clients can get the care they need and protect assets.  I also have expertise regarding the challenges of incapacity, the risks of expoitation of vulnerable adults, and how a lawyer can bring solutions as part of a team. I spent 5 years as a litigation attorney in a big law firm, so I am comfortable and successful in advocating for my clients in court.. I currently serve as Co-Chair of the Ramsey County Bar Association SoloSmall Section. I formerly served as Communications Chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association Elder Law Section.  I am also a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and Christian Legal Society of Minnesota.. I speak frequently on a variety of estate planning and elder law topics.  Sample topics include how to avoid common legal mistakes in making an estate plan or in dealing with chronic illness or dementia, and how to prevent your life savings from going to the nursing home. I present to senior groups, support groups, YMCA's, senior care providers and financial groups.  I present complicated topics in clear, understandable manner that can be practically applied.. I grew up in St. Paul and have lived in the area all my life. I also enjoy spending time with my husband, children and grandchildren, fitting in excercise, travel and getting outside whenever I can.

Karen is a partner at Tarrant & Liska, PLLC. She graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College in 1970, and from the University of Chicago Law School in 1973. She practiced law for over four years with a medium-sized Chicago firm, Friedman & Koven, in their litigation department. She has practiced law in Minnesota since 1977, and was an associate and partner with the firm Brown, Stolpestad and Smith in Saint Paul until 1982. Since 1982, she operated her own firm or has been a partner with Tarrant & Liska, PLLC.. Karen is also a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Ramsey County Bar Association. She has volunteered with the Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services since 1977. She was a member of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and received their Life Time Achievement Award in 2005.

It is no coincidence that Stotzheim Law Office & Mediation, LLC is located in St. Paul.  Patty grew up in St. Paul, attended undergraduate and law school at Hamline University.  Her father has been a small business owner in St. Paul for over forty years and her grandparents raised her parents in St. Paul.  Patty also lives in St. Paul and is committed to investing in her community professionally and personally.  Prior to attending law school, Patty was the Head Gymnastics Coach at Hamline University and the owner of Spirit Gymnastics, Inc.

Katie is an associate attorney at Jeffrey P. Scott & Associates. After graduating from the University of St. Thomas, cum laude, Katie enrolled at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. During law school, Katie developed a passion for helping families and individuals meet their lifetime needs and legacy goals through specialized estate planning. While clerking at a respected law firm in New Mexico during the summer of 2011, she gained broad experience working with clients in the areas of estate planning, probate, and guardianships and conservatorships. Katie now practices in the areas of estate planning, probate, estate and trust administration, and guardianships and conservatorships.Katie is a founding member of the Center for Girls’ Leadership, an organization aimed at inspiring young women to be the leaders of tomorrow. She currently serve as the President of the CGL's Board of Director's as well as the co-committee chair of the organizations' development committee.  She resides in Saint Paul with her husband and two cats.

I also work closely with individuals and families upon the death of a loved.  I understand the grieving process and walk individuals through the estate and probate administration process.. Disabled individuals have special needs when it comes to planning for their estate.  I assist families with disabled individuals to ensure they are receiving the benefits needed, protecting assets and ensuring the proper individuals have decision making authority through special needs trusts, guardianships and conservatorships.. I thoroughly enjoy assisting my clients achieve peace of mind to ensure their estate will be a smooth process, even in the event of a tragedy.  My passion comes from seeing my clients achieve their goals, feel peace of mind and settle a family member's estate.. I spend my time outside of work with my husband, son and daughter.  I love to watch sports, spend summer weekends at the lake, watch movies, read and bake.

Mary was born and raised in Cloquet, MN.  She loves the outdoors and has paddled many miles in the BWCA, hiked to the top of Mt. San Jacinto, the second highest peak in Southern California, and hiked a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia.  Besides Minnesota, she has lived in Oregon, California, Montana and Oklahoma.. In her spare time, Mary enjoys walking her mixed breed dogs, working with her husband in their antiques and collectibles business, playing disc golf and reading John Grisham novels.

Jennifer Mortel focuses her practice in the areas of Estate Planning, Wills & Trusts, Probate and Trust Administration, and Personal Injury. Jennifer endeavors to partner with families to secure their future goals through wills, trusts and other appropriate estate planning. She is a compassionate counselor who helps grieving family members find their way through the probate and trust administration process after the death of a loved one.  Jennifer also has extensive experience negotiating top-dollar personal injury settlements, as well as handling cases through litigation. She is a zealous advocate for her clients' rights to obtain medical, wage loss and disability benefits.. Jennifer previously served as Assistant Vice-President and head of the Personal Trust Division at Union Bank & Trust where she was responsible for the administration of all personal trusts, including revocable and irrevocable living trusts, testamentary trusts and charitable trusts, as well as probate estates. She was a partner at the law firm of Bowden Cyr Mortel, PLLC from 2009-2013 and represented clients in the areas of estate planning and personal injury and continues to act as an of counsel attorney with Bowden Cyr, PLLC.  Jennifer is a 2002 honors graduate of William Mitchell College of Law and is admitted to practice law in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Jennifer also serves as an Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and has been an Adjunct Representation Professor at William Mitchell College of Law.

Sheila received her Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law and her BS from St. Mary's University of Minnesota.  She is licensed to practice law in the state of Minnesota.Sheila has extensive experience in the business world and is a US Navy Veteran, where she held Top Secret Clearance.  Sheila is a member of several professional organizations including the Minnesota Bar Association, and the Ramsey County Bar Association.Sheila has long standing connections to the White Bear Lake Area.  She grew up in White Bear Lake and graduated from White Bear Lake High School.  She is a long-time resident of Vadnais Heights where she raised her son, Justin.  She is active in her church and community. Currently she is Chairperson of the St. Mary of the Lake Parish Leadership Council, Chairperson of the St. Mary of the Lake Stewardship Committee, and a member of the St. Mary of the Lake Outreach Ministries Committee.  She is the former President of the Villas on Edgerton Homeowners Association.  She is a member of the MN National Healthcare Directives Day Planning Committee and donates her time and skill to other causes, such as Wills for Heroes.Sheila enjoys spending time with her family and participating in church activities.  She enjoys traveling, reading, and playing board and card games.
