Robert H. Chavez was born in Los Angeles, California. After graduation from high school in Pasco, Washington, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served with 1st Battlaion, 75th Ranger Regiment and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He later obtained Bachelor of Arts Degrees in History and in Psychology in 1999 from the University of Washington. In 2002, he obtained a Juris Doctorate Degree from the Seattle University School of Law. He practices primarily in the criminal law and personal injury areas. He is admitted to practice in the State of Washington, the Eastern and Western Districts of the State of Washington and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals

I have worked as a public defender since law school.  I have represented indigent accused persons facing misdemeanors and felonies.  I have represented juveniles.  I have represented persons facing civil commitmen for mental illness.. Since 2009 I have soleley represented those facing civil commitment as sexually violent predators.. I truly believe that representing this most hated group places me directly in the prime position to protect our constitutional rights, because it is so easy to excuse taking rights away from this group.  If this happens, I believe the rest of us are next.  This erosion of liberty starts here, and I am devoted to stopping it at its source.

I am the Felony Resource Attorney with the Washington Defender Association, an advocacy, training and resource agency for criminal defense attorneys. A graduate of the University of Washington School of Law, I have worked as a public defender at Associated Counsel for the Accused in Seattle before joining the Washington Defender Association. As a resource attorney, I provide technical assistance to public defenders across the state and develop resource materials for public defenders to use in their cases. I frequently speak at programs designed to support quality indigent defense services in Washington state.
