It is the oldest and largest of the state's five water management districts. Created in 1949, the agency is responsible for managing and protecting water resources of South Florida by balancing and improving water quality, flood control, natural systems and water supply.  A key initiative is the restoration of America's Everglades – the largest environmental restoration project in the nation's history. The District is also working to improve the Kissimmee River and its floodplain, Lake Okeechobee and South Florida's coastal estuaries.. Also in 2010, Mr. Waldman was recommended by The Florida Bar Board of Governors and, upon that recommendation, later appointed by Governor Charlie Crist to a four year term as a Member of the Fourth District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission. In 2013, Mr. Waldman was elected by his fellow Commissioners as the Chairman of the Commission.. Mr. Waldman also frequently serves as an expert witness in litigation, arbitration and administrative matters involving the award of reasonable attorneys' fees and disputes involving professional standards of care in the legal community.
