I enjoy practicing family law (many lawyers don't). I often present CLE seminars and always learn so much when I prepare my remarks.. I grew up in New Orleans (yes, I am a long suffering Saints fan whose suffering has ended) and have lived in Atlanta since I started law school at Emory in 1985.. What sets our firm apart from many, is how many resources we have to help you. In addition to 13 lawyers who all specialize in family law, we have 15 staff members including paralegals, law clerks and others and we maintain close relationships with many forensic accountants, psychologists and private investigators to ensure we can meet our clients' needs on a moment's notice.

I have the experience to help you with your family law matter. The first thing I do is listen. I want to hear you say what is your problem, and what is important to you. Upon speaking with me, we can determine your main objective and the best way to achieve the goal. There is no reason to go nuclear when a precision attack will yield the required objective. I am married with three children. I am aware of family dynamics, and reality of how parents interact with each other and children. I enjoy making barbeque, and making old world sausauge and brats. If you would ask me what is may favorite store, I would say Cabelas and Bass Pro.

I co-founded Meriwether & Tharp, LLC with Robert “Bob” Tharp in 1998. In the beginning, the firm was just two young lawyers who thought that they could make a difference by teaming up together. At present, we are the largest family law firm in the state of Georgia. The firm has over 40 lawyers dedicated to helping clients get through difficult times.. In 2009, we surveyed the family law landscape and decided to make a change. We began to develop a vision of a better way to practice family law. As our vision became a reality, the firm grew.. As the practice grew, our team honed our courtroom skills to zealously advocate for our clients. But, more importantly, we learned that lawyers should work to resolve most family law cases. In some respects, working to resolve cases is much more challenging than litigating the cases. It requires digging in to find out where the problems are and looking for solutions. Often solutions are found outside of the confines of the legal system.. In addition to working to resolve the case, we also help our clients perform a three step cost-benefit analysis of their situation to help them make wise decisions. First, we help the client understand the legal strengths and weaknesses of a their case. Next, we discuss with the client the financial repercussions and costs of pursuing a specific litigation plan. And finally, we explore the long term 'emotional' price of any particular plan. The emotional price can include the value of ending a case earlier so that the client can move on with their life. The emotional price can also include the toll protracted litigation can have on children.. We are here to help. Sometimes that help involves giving the clients certain tools to save their marriage and never hire us. We love it when that opportunity comes along.. When I am not helping someone with their divorce, or trying to save their marriage, you will find me with my wife and kids or in my woodworking shop. On a personal level, I hold a Black Belt in Judo and was the State Champion in my division while in law school. I was active in my sons’ Cub Scouts and Boy Scout activities. I was also the den leader for both my sons and ran the Pack’s Cub Mobile Race (with 99 scouts) for five years in a row. I have built my children’s bedroom furniture; our kitchen table; end tables; an entire suite of furniture on our back porch including a swing bed; and even my office desk out of Ambrosia Maple. In my spare time, I also enjow using my woodworking skills to craft individualized and unique pens. Click here to see a link to my pen selection! If that weren’t enough, I also have a podcast called The Avid Woodworker ().

Nicole Crites began her legal career all the way back in high school when she participated in Volusia County's Teen Court Program. This program is designed as a diversionary program for juvenile defendants with minor criminal charges. Nicole volunteered as a teen prosecutor and went on to win Prosecutor of the Year in her county.. Nicole's commitment to service continued into adulthood, when she became a volunteer Guardian ad Litem for Alachua County. Having not even started law school yet, Nicole had plenty of experience making court appearances, speaking to judges, and confronting uncomfortable truths in pursuit of the best interests of the children she served. It was through these experiences that Nicole solidified her desire to help families going through tough times, and more specifically, help the children of families going through tough times.. Nicole received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in 2011 and went on to receive her Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. While in law school, Nicole participated in the prosecution clinic and worked in the Domestic Violence Unit of the State Attorney's Office in the Eighth Judicial Circuit, seeking justice and, most importantly, safety for the victims of domestic violence.. After being admitted to the Florida bar and working in domestic relations in Florida, Nicole decided to move closer to her family in Atlanta. Nicole continued to work in domestic relations law after her move and has frequently litigated complex matters, involving trusts, closely held businesses, complicated child custody matters, and equitable division of assets whose value is difficult to ascertain. Nicole fervently believes that it is best for children if their parents can resolve issues through a collaborative and non-adversarial approach. However, Nicole recognizes this approach is not always feasible for certain litigants and has developed an assertive and confident style of litigation in the courtroom. Nicole understands that there is wisdom in the Art of War, and that a long-term strategy, not short-term tactics, leads to the best results for clients. Nicole doesn't engage in foolishness which only serves to drive up costs and instead focuses her calm demeanor and patience to formulate a strategy designed to get her clients to the end of their litigation with favorable results.. Nicole worked as a professional chef while in undergraduate school and law school, and has brought those skills home. When she is not being a lawyer, she enjoys cooking five-star meals, and being home with her three dogs and two kids.

I am so blessed to have the privilege to advocate for families in Georgia. In my practice of restructuring families, I have had the opportunity to represent both husbands and wives and mothers and fathers in their divorces, legitimations, child custody matters, child support modifications and paternity actions. These representations include the prosecution and defense of these matters. While every case is different, many of the cases are ripe for resolution short of litigation. However, some of them must be litigated to the fullest extent in a courtroom. When you decide to hire hlg you are investing in attorneys who recognize that this is already a difficult time in your life and you need intelligent legal counsel with true compassion. I offer this delicate balance of strong and tenacious representation with comfort and respect for the very delicate subject matter. I work hard to ensure that the legal process understood so you can be prepared.. I bring a diverse perspective to assist our clients in their personal injury matters. We assist clients in various personal injury matters including car accidents, slip and falls, malicious prosecution, negligent security and other matters. We work efficiently to ensure the clients have as much knowledge about the process – including “behind the scene” knowledge. We go above and beyond the requirement and deliver professional and personal attention. An example of this stellar service is that we always attempt to reduce medical bills to ensure as much money as possible goes directly to the client even though it does not increase the amount of money we receive. While we strive to resolve claims as soon as practical, we refuse to settle an unfair claim, thus, many of our matters have to move forward in litigation.. To conclude our family representation, we also offer estate-planning service, including simple wills.. I began my career as a bond attorney where I served as counsel for governments and other entities who borrowed money for public purposes. I learned so much from this practice but I believe my major lesson was refining my case management and document drafting skills.. I look forward to utilizing all of my training to work for you!

Marcy grew up in a small town in upstate New York and attended college at the State University of New York at Potsdam. She graduated in 1999 with a B.A. in both Math and Education. After many trips to Atlanta throughout college to visit a high school friend, she moved to Georgia to attend Georgia State law school from 2001 to 2004. In 2004, Marcy began her career with a small law firm in Lawrenceville that focused on family law and criminal law, where she tried cases, argued motions, and managed her own caseload.. In 2006, she joined a medium size firm in Buckhead, where she gained the experience and organization offered by larger firms. In 2008, Marcy took the experience she gained from the small firm and the knowledge she obtained from the larger firm and began her own practice.. Marcy’s parents divorced when she was thirteen. Although it was an amicable divorce, Marcy acted out to get her parent’s attention. After reflection and therapy, Marcy began to understand how one parent’s behavior can affect a child and how the non-offending parent can help their children navigate a divorce. It was at this time she decided to focus her law practice on family law.. Marcy’s efforts have reunited children with their parents, separated children and spouses from abusive parties, and obtained child support for children and their custodial parents. Marcy's real life experience of being a child of divorced parents has also helped her understand what it means to act in the best interest of the children and advise her clients how to protect the best interest of the children.
