Attorney Joanne M. Stella has been representing clients in New Hampshire since graduating from Boston University School of Law in 1993. Over 20 years of outstanding and compassionate criminal defense and civil litigation.. During law school Attorney Stella was a research assistant to a law professor working on Title VII and IX Sexual Harassment laws. She spent her first summer interning for an International Dispute Resolution Firm in London, England and spent her second summer working for the Alaska Public Defender’s Office where she gained a passion for representing those falsely accused of crimes.. Upon graduation and up until 1996 Attorney Stella worked tirelessly as a court appointed counsel for indigent defendants in the criminal courts. As a New Hampshire Public Defender her caseload included felony level sexual assault and drug cases as well as misdemeanor criminal offenses and juvenile delinquency offenses.. After leaving the Public Defender’s office Attorney Stella began her own practice as the contract attorney hired to provide legal services to all full-time students at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). During her 18 year tenure as the UNH legal services attorney she has represented over 9,000 students. Many thousands of those cases involved drug and alcohol offenses, as well as the litany of criminal offenses often connected to the use of substances such as DWI, Possession of Fake IDs, Simple Assault, Resisting Arrest, Underage Intoxication, etc. Attorney Stella has experience representing those charged locally by the Durham Police, UNH Police, Dover Police, New Hampshire Liquor Law Enforcement Officer and New Hampshire State Police as well as representation in the surrounding communities such as Newmarket and Portsmouth. In addition to guidance in their criminal cases, UNH students received expert advice from Attorney Stella on the collateral consequences affecting their status as a student for such things as financial aid, scholarships, study abroad, disciplinary matters, immigration issues for international students and the potential impact on future employment. Attorney Stella has the knowledge and experience to guide young adults through this maze of sanctions that can occur as a collateral consequence of being arrested. Also, during her time at UNH Attorney Stella counseled thousands of students involved in landlord tenant disputes and twice argued their cases successfully in the New Hampshire Supreme Court.. Attorney Stella has tried hundreds of cases, both criminal and civil, and everything in between from Supreme Court appeals to motor vehicle hearings. She has represented thousands of clients and has a proven track record of success. Attorney Stella always provides a free consultation and will take the time address each client’s needs expertly and with compassion.

John began his legal career as an attorney in Washington D.C. where his practice focused on representing educational institutions in litigation in federal court and before various government administrative agencies. John returned to New England in 1997 to join one of New Hampshire’s largest law firms, Devine, Millimet & Branch, where he rose through the ranks to become a partner.. In 2005, John started his own firm that in 2007 became Sherman Law, PLLC located in beautiful downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Through this experience, John has learned many of the issues first-hand that small businesses must face. These range from hiring and terminating employees to handling payroll and finances. He now uses both his legal knowledge and personal experience to counsel and represent a broad array of clients that includes both businesses and individuals.. His work on behalf of local businesses includes counseling and risk management in the areas of employment and labor law. In addition to litigating wrongful termination and sexual harassment claims, he counsels businesses on how to draft and enforce severance agreements, covenants not to compete, and non-solicitation agreements.. Having represented zoning and planning boards for many years, John also represents clients who need assistance in the areas of real estate, land use, and zoning. He similarly utilizes his construction litigation background to represent homeowners, developers, contractors, and subcontractors in construction related matters such as negligent supervision claims and OSHA violations.. In the past, National insurance companies hired John to represent their insureds in personal injury actions and also to defend the companies in bad faith, misrepresentation, breach of contract, and consumer protection act claims. Since most personal injury cases are resolved through negotiation between an attorney and an insurance company representative, John’s knowledge and understanding of the industry greatly benefits the firm’s personal injury clients such as those who have experienced sexual assault, sexual abuse, traumatic brain injury, wrongful death, dog bites, and automobile accidents.. John graduated from St. John’s Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts. He then received his BA degree in Political Science from Boston College. He was a cum laude honors graduate of the American University Washington College of Law. He sat for and passed three bar exams: Virginia, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. He actively practices at present throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

I practice law in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Over the years I've successfully represented clients in family, criminal, civil, bankruptcy, appellate courts, and before state administrative agencies.. I've negotiated settlements with prosecutors in criminal matters, and with opposing counsel in hotly contested and complex divorces. But when negotiations don't work out, I’ll do whatever I can to get you a solution to your legal problems in a cost effective manner – a solution that works for you. That means that where possible, I’ll work to negotiate a settlement. But when the other side just won’t be reasonable, I’m prepared to take your case to the judge or jury and even to appeal if necessary.. I look forward to working with you.
