Matthew Skillern
Firm: Skillern Firm Divorce and Child Custody Lawyers PLLC
701 N. Post Oak , Houston , Texas 77024
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
Matthew A. Skillern is the founder and lead family law attorney at The Skillern Firm. Matthew is a strong and successful trial attorney known for dominating the opposition in court. In highly contested divorce and child custody cases, his skills in strategy and effective performance in the courtroom set him apart.. Matthew believes being an effective advocate requires aggressiveness tempered with reason, logic, and compassion. In his opinion, blindly going forward out of anger and emotion does not get good results. He handles all cases with professionalism, courtesy, and compassion for his client. Although Matthew has been successfully litigating cases for years, he believes the courtroom is not the only place to resolve the complex and sensitive issues commonly found in family law matters. Recognizing that every client and case is different, Matthew advocates the use of negotiation and mediation to resolve marital and custody disputes. However, when a dispute cannot be resolved through such means, Matthew is unafraid to take the matter to trial.. Matthew grew up in Stafford, Texas with humble beginnings. Upon graduation from high school, he played football at Tyler Junior College, and went on to graduate from Baylor University with a degree in Political Science. He obtained his juris doctorate from South Texas College of Law in Houston. Matthew is a first generation college graduate, and often worked three jobs at once to finance his education. His tenacity, work ethic, and drive are evident in his firm, case management, and advocacy skills. While Matthew started his legal career as a prosecutor for the Smith County District Attorney’s Office in Tyler, Texas, handling a wide range of criminal matters and trying cases to juries, upon moving home to Houston, he switched to the other side of the courtroom, honing his trial and courtroom skills at one of Houston’s premier criminal defense firms.. Matthew is dedicated to his family and passionate about children and child related issues. Clients, colleagues and friends respect him for his dynamic courtroom skills and presence, all the while recognizing his kind heart and compassionate nature. Thus, Matthew founded The Skillern Firm with the idea that he could utilize his strong advocacy skills for the good of others – because it is not just “family law,” it is someone’s life.. Matthew was selected as a Rising Star by the Texas Super Lawyers in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015, a distinction awarded to the top attorneys under 40. Only 2.5% of all lawyers in the State of Texas are selected as Rising Stars. Matthew has also been recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. As a legal assistant during law school, I was exposed to family law and immediately knew that's the type of law I wanted to practice. Family Law gives me the ability to connect with people on a personal level and help solve problems and lead people through one of the toughest struggles of their lives. Whether it's in the courtroom or out of the courtroom, I enjoy being able to effectively and zealously advocate for my clients and change their lives for the better.. I grew up in Coppell, Texas and attended Ursuline Academy in Dallas. I later went on to attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth for college and Texas Wesleyan School of Law (now Texas A&M School of Law) for law school. My husband and I are avid TCU fans and never miss a football game. When we are not cheering on the horned frogs, you can usually find me running along the Trinity Trail or spending quality time with husband, two daughters and two dogs.
Mstislav Talavera-Karmanov
Firm: Slav Law, PC
6034 W Courtyard Dr , Austin , Texas 78730
Practice Areas: Divorce & Separation
I was born in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico to a Russian Mother and a Mexican Father. My parents met in Moscow where my father went to study his undergraduate degree. When my mother was pregnant my parents moved to Mexico to be closer to my father’s family and they began work as educators. After only a few years in Mexico my parents decided that they wanted to continue their education in America and began applying for visas so that we could immigrate to this country as a family. The University of Texas accepted my parents into their Ph.D. program and allowed me to come into the United States with my parents. I have been a Longhorn fan ever since. After my parents received their PhDs from UT they both accepted jobs as professors in Joplin, Missouri and I began middle school in Missouri. I graduated high school in Missouri and to stay close to my family I decided to attend Washington University in St. Louis on a scholarship. I graduated with dual degrees from Arts & Sciences and the Business school and decided to work after college. I found the corporate life to be monotonous and without passion and made a decision to attend law school after only a year of work in the business sector. I had excelled in debate both in high school and college and decided that public speaking and oration were better suited for me than the corporate life.I attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas for law school in my desperate attempt to get back to Texas after having to deal with Midwest winters for such a long time. I graduated in 2010 and began litigating immediately with Legal Aid. I wanted to help people who were suffering, and I began doing Veteran’s and VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) work immediately to help those who needed it most. I found the courtroom and litigation to be the most rewarding work I had ever done in my life. I have continued to work in Family Law since the beginning of my career and I have devoted my entire career exclusively to family issues. My wife, Elizabeth Shehan, and I have a toddler named Dmitri and a baby named Mikhail that have helped me to understand the difficulties of being a parent more than any case or legal argument ever could. In our spare time, my wife and I enjoy competing against each other in fantasy football. I speak Spanish, Russian and English and am always excited to get to speak to other native speakers around Austin.
