Growing up in Newark, New Jersey, I witnessed first hand the disparate treatment of individuals based on their country of origin, race and station in life. Even before becoming an attorney, I wanted to ensure that the civil rights afforded under the United States Constitution to individuals and business entities were equally and readily available. In furtherance of this objective, I went to Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ and studied the history, religion, languages and culture of many Native American peoples throughout North America as well as cultural anthropology.. Realizing that the study of law would further my objectives, in 1976 I enrolled at Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., our nation's capital. While at Howard, I took a constitutional law course under the direction of Herbert Reid, a preeminent constitutional law professor and scholar, who was one of the junior lawyers in Brown v. Board of Education , the famous 1954 civil rights case that led to the nullification of the separate but equal doctrine that had precluded African Americans from attending desegregated schools. This course, together with other civil rights-related courses, prepared me for a 1978 summer clerkship with the Solicitor's Office - Division of Indian Affairs, at the United States Department of Interior in Washington, D.C.. Following a recommendation of the Deputy Solicitor for Indian Affairs, for my third year in law school I embarked on a special fellowship in Indian Law and Natural Resources Law at the University of New Mexico's National Indian Law Center and Natural Resources Law Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.. With this educational background and resources, for the next two and one-half years I secured employment representing Indian tribes and individual Native Americans in Nebraska and Arizona. Throughout that time, I realized that to properly represent persons and business entities in pursuit of their civil rights, it was incumbent upon me to diversify my areas of practice to include business, family, and property law in order to fully assist these individuals and entities to realize their full citizenship rights, which for too long had been denied to them because of their country of origin, race and station in life. Thus, to broaden my practice areas, I have worked as a partner in large law firms and as a sole practitioner, representing clients in complex commercial, property and family law matters, while still remaining true to my civil rights practice.. In practicing law for over 30 years, I have become acutely aware that one of the most overlooked civil rights issue of our day is the manner in which our government views and treats non-immigrants and immigrants who seek to enter, visit and work in the United States and/or to become lawful permanent residents (holders of "greencards") and naturalized citizens of our country under the United States immigration laws. In furtherance of my initial civil rights objectives, I now primarily practice in the immigration law field to facilitate individuals and business entities to achieve their goal of becoming fully integrated into the U.S. community at large and to hire qualified employees of diverse national origins to accomplish their business aspirations.. I provide a full spectrum of legal services in the field of family and business-related immigration law. Unlike most other immigration law practitioners, I am able to complement the services rendered to my clients with the widespread legal experience that I have attained over the years, which has proven invaluable to my clients particularly when they are in need of ancillary services in the areas of business, corporate, family and real estate law to further their immigration law applications with the USCIS and U.S. consular offices.

Immigration Lawyers in Flushing, California (11354): Your Guide to Navigating Complex Legal Waters

Flushing, a vibrant neighborhood located in the borough of Queens, New York, is known for its rich cultural diversity and bustling community. The ZIP code 11354 encompasses a significant portion of Flushing, which is home to a large immigrant population. As one of the fastest-growing areas in New York City, the community thrives on its multicultural fabric, which includes a wide array of Asian influences, particularly from Chinese and Korean residents. With a growing number of individuals seeking to establish permanent residency, citizenship, or work permits, the role of immigration lawyers in Flushing has never been more critical.

Common Immigration Legal Issues Faced by Residents

Residents of the 11354 area often encounter various immigration-related legal issues. Some of the most prevalent challenges include:

  1. Visa Applications: Many residents seek assistance in applying for visas, whether they are for work, study, or family reunification. Ensuring that applications are completed accurately is essential to avoid delays or denials.

  2. Green Card Issues: Navigating the complexities of obtaining a Green Card can be daunting. Issues such as eligibility, sponsorship, and the application process require expert legal guidance.

  3. Deportation Defense: With the evolving immigration policies at the federal level, many residents find themselves at risk of deportation. An immigration lawyer can provide crucial representation to prevent removal from the U.S.

  4. Naturalization: Individuals looking to become U.S. citizens must undergo a rigorous process that includes interviews and background checks. Legal representation can facilitate a smoother transition through this process.

Local Case Examples or Situations

Consider the case of Mei, a Flushing resident who immigrated from China. Mei applied for a Green Card after marrying a U.S. citizen. However, complications arose when her initial application was denied due to a missing document. With the assistance of a local immigration lawyer, Mei was able to gather the necessary paperwork and successfully appeal the decision, allowing her to obtain her Green Card and secure a stable future in the U.S.

Another fictional but realistic scenario involves David, a college student from South Korea. He faced the threat of deportation after overstaying his student visa. By hiring a lawyer familiar with local immigration laws, David navigated the complexities of his case, ultimately obtaining a temporary stay and the opportunity to reapply for a valid visa.

Typical Lawyer Fees and How They Vary in This ZIP

In Flushing, immigration lawyer fees can vary widely based on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s level of experience. Generally, fees for initial consultations range from $100 to $300. For more extensive legal representation—such as preparing a Green Card application or defending against deportation—costs can increase significantly, ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 or more. It is essential for residents to discuss fee structures upfront and inquire about payment plans or sliding scales that may be offered.

Why Hiring a Local Lawyer Helps

Engaging a local immigration lawyer in Flushing offers several advantages. Firstly, local lawyers have a deep understanding of the specific immigration challenges faced by residents in this multicultural community. Their familiarity with local policies, procedures, and even local government offices can expedite the legal process.

Secondly, a local lawyer can provide personalized attention that larger firms may not offer. They are more likely to be accessible for meetings and consultations, fostering a trusting relationship that is crucial during stressful immigration proceedings.

Finally, local immigration attorneys often have established connections with community organizations, which can provide additional resources and support for clients navigating their immigration journeys.

If you are seeking assistance with immigration issues in the 11354 ZIP code, consider reaching out to a local professional who can guide you through the complexities of immigration law.
