In San Antonio, residents frequently encounter several appeals-related legal issues. Some of the most common include:

  1. Criminal Appeals: Individuals convicted of crimes may seek to overturn their convictions based on procedural errors, insufficient evidence, or ineffective assistance of counsel.

  2. Family Law Appeals: Decisions regarding custody, child support, and divorce settlements can have significant life impacts. If a party believes the ruling was unjust, they may pursue an appeal.

  3. Civil Appeals: Cases involving personal injury, contracts, or property disputes also lead to appeals when one party disputes the trial court's judgment.

Local Case Examples

Consider a hypothetical case involving a San Antonio resident, John, who was convicted of a DWI. After consulting with an appeals lawyer, he discovers that critical evidence was improperly admitted during his trial. His attorney files an appeal, arguing that this procedural error compromised the integrity of the verdict. After months of litigation, the appellate court agrees and overturns John's conviction, allowing him to pursue a new trial.

Alternatively, imagine a custody dispute between two parents, Sarah and Mark. After a judge awards custody to Mark, Sarah believes that the ruling does not consider crucial evidence about Mark’s unstable living situation. With the help of an experienced appeals lawyer, Sarah files an appeal, presenting her case to a higher court, ultimately resulting in a favorable modification of the custody arrangements.

I grew up in San Antonio, Texas.  I graduated magna cum laude from Trinity University in 2005 with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Economics and Sociology.  After graduating from Trinity University, I went on to earn my J.D. from St. Mary’s University School of Law.  There, I served as the Executive Comments Editor for one of the school’s major publications, The Scholar: St. Mary’s Law Review on Minority Issues.  I also worked extensively with a San Antonio mediator and arbitrator, Dan Naranjo, researching and writing on a number of legal topics.. After law school, I decided to remain in San Antonio to give back to the community I grew up in.  I served as a Briefing Attorney with the Fourth Court of Appeals for Chief Justice Alma Lopez and Justice Marialyn Barnard for two years.  After that, I worked as an oil and gas attorney reviewing a variety of documents surrounding the transfer of property.  In 2013, I decided to open my own practice, handling a number of probate matters in the following counties: Bexar, Comal, and Wilson.  Shorty after opening my practice, a Staff Attorney position with the Fourth Court of Appeals opened and I was asked to return to the court to continue appellate work permanently.
