I’ve wanted to be a lawyer since I was a little kid. I had no idea that I would be representing families across the state of Texas in difficult and emotional divorces and custody cases.. Where did I start in order to get here? My guess is that it is not where you’d think. I was raised in Waxahachie, Texas, a small town south of Dallas. I was born in Wisconsin, but I came to Texas as soon as I could when I was three years old; it has been my home ever since. I am one of seven children – five natural born and two brothers adopted. Both my parents bleed Aggie maroon (although only one of their children went to A&M). My dad was a veterinarian and owned his own practice and my mom a homemaker in charge of the seven children. I am the only lawyer in my family.. I attended the University of Texas School of Law after completing my undergraduate degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC. At UT Law, I immediately figured out that my personality would be better suited in a courtroom and working directly with clients, instead of pushing paper for large corporations. My third year of law school, I turned my focus to litigation and worked as a student attorney at the University of Texas Domestic Violence Clinic. At the end of my time in law school, I took a job at a boutique, high-end family law litigation firm in Austin, Texas, where I would spend the first five years of my career.. Since getting out of law school, I’ve learned a lot professionally, and I’ve learned a lot personally.. I got married right after law school and a few years after my then wife gave birth to my son Parker, who I love with all my heart. But when Parker was just a baby, his mom and I went through a divorce. At the time of my divorce, I had represented hundreds of clients through their own divorces and it was becoming second nature for me. My own divorce changed all that. It was hard on me. It was hard on my ex-wife. I’m sure it was hard on our son. But we got through it, and I’m grateful for the lessons that I learned in my own divorce and how I can now truly relate to my clients.. My divorce was finalized in 2015. But that wasn’t the hardest thing I would face that year. Just a couple of months after my divorce decree was signed, my father passed away unexpectedly at the age of 60. He died at the veterinarian clinic, which is where you would always find him if he wasn’t at church or with his family.. Getting that phone call was the hardest thing I have ever had to go through in my life. But it made me a better person, a better lawyer, and a better father to my children.. Professionally, I’ve learned what my father always taught me about running his own business – never work for anyone else and try to do it your own way if you can. I’ve worked for traditional and elitist law firms during and after law school. I’ve been in the corner office. I’ve tried cases where the lawyers bring boxes upon boxes of paper to the courthouse that never see the light of day the courtroom. And I can tell you after all of my experience that these lawyers are falling short.. The traditional law firm relies on paper, servers, and fax machines. Clients are treated as if they are below the lawyers. The law firm clunks around, clients do not know what is going on with their case, and cases have to settle for bad deals before Court because the lawyers are either disorganized or unprepared for what happens at the courthouse or are unaware of what could happen at the courthouse.Brian and I do things differently. We have always committed to utilizing technology and striving to be an efficient law firm focused on the client, not us. We’re paperless, on the cloud, efficient and laser focused on our client needs. Our approach is newer, different, and better.. Today I sit here as a proud business owner and a proud father. Since my divorce, I remarried to the love of my life, Sarah Gilbreath, who now the CEO of the law firm. Sarah is my best friend, my partner, and the most beautiful and amazing woman I've ever met in my life. I look at her and my children every day wondering how I got so lucky. Just a few years ago, Sarah gave birth to my second child, Harper, and again in 2020, we were blessed with another child, Walker. Walker, Harper and Parker are the love of my life. Everything Sarah and I do, we do for them, just like my parents did for me. Sarah and I could not be prouder of our children. We are building this law firm with Brian hoping to make all our children proud.. I have been Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization since 2015. I am rated 10.0 Superb by and have hundreds five-star reviews across Google and Avvo. I have been selected as a Rising Star by Texas SuperLawyers every year since 2017 and in 2020 I was named as one of the Top 100 Up and Coming by SuperLawyers I am frequently asked to serve as a guest speaker on various family law and litigation matters, with a particular focus on trial work and jury trials. I try more cases each year to judges, arbitrators and juries than a vast majority of my peers, and with our team, we do it different and we do it better.I used to have a trick I used at the end of a potential client consultations – I still pull it out every once in a while. At the end of the consult I’d tell the potential client to text me in the next day or so; see if I text back right away. And I always would.. That’s the kind of lawyer I want to be. You can always find me on my cell phone, my email, or by reaching out to my amazing team. I hope our paths cross someday soon.

I’m an advisor, confidant, and problem solver for people in difficult situations. If you have a criminal or family law problem in the Austin area, I can help. I’m fearless in the courtroom, tough in negotiations, experienced in complex financial matters, and passionate about helping my clients to achieve their goals.. While on vacation to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, I fell in love with Africa and decided to return as more than a tourist. So, in 2013, I moved to Namibia, Africa. There, I counseled a United Nations-funded organization working with rural farmers and taught high school physics and chemistry. I also met my wife, a native Austinite, while living and working in Africa.. Since returning to my wife’s hometown of Austin in 2015, I have practiced exclusively criminal and family law: First, as a Texas criminal prosecutor. Now, as a private attorney who solves criminal and family law problems as the Managing Attorney at Thompson Law.
I've been involved in the Austin legal community since I was a student at the University of Texas at Austin, preparing occupational licenses, filing divorces, and making DWI videos. I went to Baylor University School of Law, graduated in 2.5 years and returned to practice here. Over that time I've watched the Austin legal community grow and developed a practice with experiences helping people with family law issues, business problems from breached contracts to document review for the sale of a small business, and the citizen accused criminally.. I have opened my own firm after 10 years of associate experience at firms of different size and practice areas. The majority of my pracitce is family law primarily due to it's litigation focus. We handle divorces, modifications, suits affecting parent-child relationships, and other issues that can arise, such as enforcement of existing decrees and orders. Typically these situations involve helping people during very stressful times in life. I enjoy what I do, and I aim to keep a practice focused on informed clients and long time relationships.
I will fight for your rights by combining great advocacy skills with contemplative research and knowledge of the law. Your case is important to me because it is important to you. Contact me today to discuss your case and how we can work together to achieve your goals.
I was raised in the west Texas town of Abilene, where my dad was a Legal Aid Lawyer and my mom a probation officer for the county. I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in 2000 and was a case manager for adults with developmental disabilities after college. I graduated with honors from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in 2006.
I was born in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico to a Russian Mother and a Mexican Father. My parents met in Moscow where my father went to study his undergraduate degree. When my mother was pregnant my parents moved to Mexico to be closer to my father’s family and they began work as educators. After only a few years in Mexico my parents decided that they wanted to continue their education in America and began applying for visas so that we could immigrate to this country as a family. The University of Texas accepted my parents into their Ph.D. program and allowed me to come into the United States with my parents. I have been a Longhorn fan ever since. After my parents received their PhDs from UT they both accepted jobs as professors in Joplin, Missouri and I began middle school in Missouri. I graduated high school in Missouri and to stay close to my family I decided to attend Washington University in St. Louis on a scholarship. I graduated with dual degrees from Arts & Sciences and the Business school and decided to work after college. I found the corporate life to be monotonous and without passion and made a decision to attend law school after only a year of work in the business sector. I had excelled in debate both in high school and college and decided that public speaking and oration were better suited for me than the corporate life.I attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas for law school in my desperate attempt to get back to Texas after having to deal with Midwest winters for such a long time. I graduated in 2010 and began litigating immediately with Legal Aid. I wanted to help people who were suffering, and I began doing Veteran’s and VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) work immediately to help those who needed it most. I found the courtroom and litigation to be the most rewarding work I had ever done in my life. I have continued to work in Family Law since the beginning of my career and I have devoted my entire career exclusively to family issues. My wife, Elizabeth Shehan, and I have a toddler named Dmitri and a baby named Mikhail that have helped me to understand the difficulties of being a parent more than any case or legal argument ever could. In our spare time, my wife and I enjoy competing against each other in fantasy football. I speak Spanish, Russian and English and am always excited to get to speak to other native speakers around Austin.
I was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas. I grew up cheering for the University of Kansas Jayhawks, so naturally, I earned my Bachelor’s of Social Work, Master’s of Social Work, and Juris Doctor from KU.. While pursuing my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, I volunteered at the local domestic violence center and answered the crisis hotline. When I graduated with my Master’s degree, I started working for the domestic violence center full time. I helped victims safety plan around violence, leave abusive relationships safely, connected them with attorneys to represent them in legal proceedings, and accompanied them to Court as a source of support. Watching the injustices that survivors of domestic violence faced in the legal system is what led me to pursue becoming an attorney.. While attending the University of Kansas School of Law, I focused on litigation and interned for the local district attorney's office. After law school, the mountains called my name so I moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where I worked in child support enforcement for three years. As a child support enforcement lawyer, I established paternity and support orders, modified support orders, prosecuted contempt actions for non-payment of child support, and facilitated a problem-solving court. I was actively involved in the Ben S. Wendelken American Inn of Court and the El Paso County Young Lawyers Association. On the weekends, I could be found in the mountains with my husband, either hiking with my golden retriever or snowboarding.. My husband is a native Texan so we were very excited when his military service brought us to central Texas.
