“Fighting for the Underdog”. The theme of my life has been a determination to fight for the underdog. My work is a natural extension of that theme and fulfills me every day. I value hard work above most other things in my life. I often find myself preoccupied with how to fix a client’s problem or how to fix ERISA on a larger scale. Helping clients with disabilities became a personal mission of mine after seeing my father, a disabled veteran, struggle to work and support his family while dealing with the consequences of debilitating medical conditions. Running a business and raising children in a busy city is all consuming, but I am as happy as I’ve ever been, and wouldn’t have it any other way. I also try to practice mindfulness throughout the day, which helps me stay calm in stressful situations. At the end of the day, I enjoy listening to music on Spotify, a book on Audible, or a podcast. My last employment as an intern was at the Alameda County Public Defenders Office.  Here I was assigned many duties including the initial intake of the accused. Again, I gained great courtroom experience and extensive training on all aspects of a criminal case, but the biggest lesson here was caring about the people you defend!  They were not files or numbers, as many of the Judges and Prosecutors saw them.  They were people wanting to be heard, and whether you like it or not this is what OUR Constitution affords them.. After passing the bar, I began working as at the Santa Cruz Public Defender's Office.  I worked here for a total of two years and conducted at least 18 jury trials with a high success rate (I think I lost two).  I received in-office weekly training pertaining to all aspects of a handling a criminal case. I was also sent for training at the Western Trial Advocacy Institute (run by Gerry Spence and considered to be the top trial school in the country) in Wyoming for  an extensive week long trial work training.  I left the Santa Cruz Public Defender's Office feeling confident that I now possessed all the tools necessary to competently and aggressively represent private clients.. After leaving the Public Defender positions, I opened several offices and have been in private practice ever since.  Every day, and in every case, I use the knowledge acquired at my previous jobs as well as the knowledge acquired I acquire on a daily basis. During law school, Jora served as an Equal Justice Fund Fellow for Bay Area Legal Aid, and also clerked at the East Bay Community Law Center and the USF Street Law Program. Following law school, she worked for the law firm of Berg & Parker, LLP. From 2002 to 2005, she worked at Employment Lawyers Group with Robert Lazo, a plaintiff’s side employment and labor law firm. In 2005, Jora formed her own law firm, engaging in civil rights litigation and social justice oriented advocacy work in partnership with other law firms. While in private practice, Jora served as the Program Director for the East Bay VIP Mentors, Inc., assisting youth transitioning out of the California Youth Authority (CYA) and a pro bono staff attorney for the National Center for Youth Law (NCYL).. In 2010, Jora returned to the non-profit world by joining Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) as their Senior Staff Attorney where she was a part of the litigation team for Dukes v. Walmart and Mansourian v. UC Regents. She also served as the Campaign Leader for ERA’s Marginalized Women Worker Campaign.

Jim Butler handles cases of career ending injuries in personal injury, workers compensation and social security cases. He represents members of many of the building trades; electricians, carpenters, laborers, boilermakers etc. Jim is a past president of the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association, and currently serves as president of the California Applicant's Attorneys Association. Jeff Brence has broad experience in civil litigation, including construction, employment law, unlawful detainer actions, real estate contract disputes, and litigating probate matters.. Mr. Brence has represented numerous clients including general contractors, subcontractors, real estate developers, and real estate purchasers.  Mr. Brence has experience in law and motion, has drafted several successful summary judgment motions, and has filed briefs in the California Court of Appeals.. Prior to coming to California in 2009, Mr. Brence studied at the University of Colorado and spent his weekends teaching skiing.. Mr. Brence is a member of the San FranciscoCounty and San Mateo County Bar Associations, and is licensed to practice in California.

In 2011, Oktober opened the Law Offices of Oktober M. Miller providing litigation services for his own clientele as well as maintain his position as senior litigation associate-Of-Counsel with Miller Washington & Kim, LLP, Clancy & Diaz, LLP and The Wakeford Law Firm. He resided in the East Bay with his wife, a native of Dresden, Germany, and their two children.
