Jeff is originally from the heart of the Rocky Mountains, where self-reliance and individual determination is a way of life, just like it is in Alaska. At a young age he served our country while on active duty in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman/surgical medic. For six years he worked in the surgical and post-surgical areas of Naval Hospitals in California, earning a Vocational Nursing license along the way. It was that interest in working with patients that led to his achieving a bachelor’s degree in Hospital Management and Health Care Administration, from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.. However, Jeff always knew he wanted to be an attorney and to help people. Graduating in the upper half of his class at the University of Wyoming, College of Law; Jeff then completed a highly competitive Masters in Law or L.L.M. in American Indian and Indigenous Persons Law from the University of Tulsa, College of Law. This was a very rich and rewarding experience that took him on a course that would not only take him permanently to Alaska but would also form his life work representing folks that often can’t get the legal help they need and deserve.. James grew up in a small town in North Carolina, where he learned to value hard work and commitment. He attended college at North Carolina State University, where he received degrees in Biochemistry and Zoology.  James originally planned to attend medical school, but discovered, toward the end of his college career, that he had an aptitude and a love for the law.. James attended law school at the University of Georgia, where he received his Juris Doctor in law. Because of his strong medical and science background, his first job in law was with a medical malpractice defense firm in Atlanta, Georgia. James soon learned that representing doctors and insurance companies was not a very good fit for someone who favored the individual over large corporations. I am also one of only two Alaskans elected as a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel ().. I am active in drafting and promoting legislation to keep Alaska in the forefront of modern developments in estate planning and trust administration law. I was the primary drafter of Alaska’s laws governing modification of irrevocable trusts, the Alaska 529 College Savings plan and pre-mortem trust and will validation. I was also instrumental in drafting the Alaska Limited Liability Company legislation and secured the first IRS private letter ruling on conversion of a partnership into a LLC.  I was intensely involved in the revisions to Alaska Trust Company laws and formed the first Private Trust Company established in Alaska.

I helped people navigate some of the hardest moments of their lives: divorce, custody, property and debt division, and more. Little did I know that some of the hardest moments of my life would include losing my parents within four months of each other.. Although we knew what my parents’ wishes were after they passed away, neither of them planned their end-of-life-care or signed something as simple as a HIPAA release or living Will (also known as an advance healthcare directive). As a result, we never knew what their final healthcare wishes were for the time preceding their deaths.. My mom, suffering from terminal brain cancer, was forced to pass away on someone else’s terms. She lay on her deathbed for 12 days without food, hydration, or pain medication. Since there was nothing in writing regarding her last wishes, my sister was able to prevent me from participating in my mother’s end-of-life decision-making process, talking to her physicians, or securing her pain medication.. To this day, a rift exists in my family because of that.  Because of the need to prevent family fueds I changed my practice to Estate Planning, Wills, and Trusts.

I have represented clients in courts throughout the state and have extensive experience in rural Alaska. I began his legal career in private practice in Bethel, Alaska, where I represented both plaintiffs and defendants in criminal, personal injury, wrongful death and other matters.. After relocating to Anchorage, I continued on as assistant Public Defender in the Anchorage office of the Public Defender Agency and assistant Public Advocate with the Office of Public Advocacy, where I managed varied types of criminal defense, including post-conviction matters and parole. I was also responsible for representing Agency clients in the felony drug/felony DUI wellness court and conducted multiple trainings for Agency attorneys.. I graduated from Berkeley Law in 2001 and then moved to Alaska to clerk for the Alaska Supreme Court. I owned a law firm for 13 years, where I practiced primarily immigration law. In 2018, I began working at Shaftel Delman, LLC, where I continued my immigration practice and also practiced estate planning, business law, and probate/trust administration. I decided to become a lawyer while working for my father's law firm when I was in high school. I watched my father try cases, and decided that I wanted to become a trial attorney. In 1984 I spent a year abroad, studying at the Gymnasium Mussenredder in Hamburg, Germany.. I graduated from the University at Santa Barbara in 1985 with Honors in History and German Literature. I obtained my law degree in 1991 from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California. In 1992, I left California, and moved to Alaska. When I arrived in Alaska, I clerked for a Superior Court Judge and then worked as a public defender for approximately 5 years. I opened my own law firm and limited my practice to the areas of criminal defense, family law, and personal injury.. On June 20, 2011, I was featured as co-counsel on 48 Hours television program, CBS murder of Bonnie Craig, a 17 year-old cold case.

I came to Alaska in 1995 fresh out of lawschool with a plan to stay for a year and never left.  In 2007, my wife, Jeannie, and I started our own firm, focusing our practice on divorce and family law. Elected to the Anchorage Assembly in 2007, I served the Municipality of Anchorage as its first acting Mayor from January to June 2009. After an elbow injury ended my football career, I worked as a ski instructor and helped coach high school sports before going to law school at Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California.. I began working for the Anchorage District Attorney’s Office in 2009. From 2009 until 2013, I prosecuted cases ranging from misdemeanors to felony level drug crimes and financial and property crimes. I also spent time managing rural caseloads for Whittier and Saint Paul.. In 2013, I joined the Law Office of Brent R. Cole, P.C., and practiced aviation law, corporate and small business transactions, and civil litigation. I also handled a variety of criminal matters including fish and game violations, guiding offenses, commercial fishing tickets, and DUIs..
