I started my career working as a prosecutor in the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office. From 2003 to 2007, I prosecuted cases ranging from simple misdemeanors to complex felonies. I came to the conclusion that the criminal justice system in Baltimore was disfunctional and often treated people unfairly, especially the poor and vulnerable. I left because I wanted to help people and because I did not want to continue to be part of the failed war on drugs.. In 2007, I was fortunate enough to join the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. I left in 2016 to start a private practice.. You can read more about me on my website .
I primarily focus on debtor-side bankruptcy. I handle approximately 200 bankruptcy cases a year and twenty adversary proceedings (lawsuits that arise in the context of a bankruptcy case). Each case is important and we treat chapter 7 clients with the same level of respect and care as corporate cases. I do not charge for the consultation and I'm always willing to find the best solution for my clients. I am a member of the Maryland, D.C. and California bars as well as the United States District Courts for the District of Maryland, District of Columbia, Northern District for the District of California and the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.
I graduated from the University of Georgia in 2001 and from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2004. I was admitted to the Maryland bar in 2004, and shortly thereafter became Managing Attorney of the YWCA of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Domestic Violence Legal Services program, where I provided representation to victims of abuse in their domestic violence and family law matters until early 2010. I am a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Maryland Hispanic Bar Association and the Anne Arundel Bar Association. I currently serve on the Judicial Nominations Committee of the Maryland Hispanic Bar Association and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence. Since entering private practice in April of 2010, I have concentrated in negotiating and litigating family law matters, including domestic violence matters in District and Circuit Court.
I care about my clients and their lives. In my career, I have worked with thousands of people from many walks of life facing many different challenges. I realize that going through a divorce, caring for children, or fighting for what you think is right can be one of the most challenging, frustrating, and difficult times of your life—on many levels. As a client, I ask you to think hard about your case, to do what you can to improve your situation and your case, because I am willing to work hard for you, to chart a course together with you to achieve your objectives.
I believe in going to court with a solution, not a problem. What I do in my practice is try to understand why my clients got into trouble and determine how I can make a difference in their future. Properly preparing a client and their case before court is the most important job I have; it can make a difference in the success of their case.
I am very aware of the emotional toll and strain caused by an inability to keep up with house payments, credit card payments, and other financial obligations. I try to listen to my clients patiently, return calls promptly, and help them achieve their objectives in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. After an initial meeting with a client, I make recommendations regarding the best way to deal with that client’s particular situation.
I am very active in my Church and my local community. I serve on the board of directors of a local women's recovery organization.
I am a 1970 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with distinction (highest honors). While on active duty in the Navy, I attended law school at night, graduating with a Juris Doctor, summa cum laude (third in my class) in 1978. I retired from the Naval Reserve as a Commander in 1991. In 1994, I also received an LL.M.. I have been a practicing lawyer since 1978, having tried hundreds of cases and done hundreds of appeals.. I am rated AV by Martindale-Hubbell.
