While on vacation to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, I fell in love with Africa and decided to return as more than a tourist. So, in 2013, I moved to Namibia, Africa. There, I counseled a United Nations-funded organization working with rural farmers and taught high school physics and chemistry. I also met my wife, a native Austinite, while living and working in Africa.. Since returning to my wife’s hometown of Austin in 2015, I have practiced exclusively criminal and family law: First, as a Texas criminal prosecutor. Now, as a private attorney who solves criminal and family law problems as the Managing Attorney at Thompson Law.

I was born in Ohio but as many of us Texans say, " I got here as fast as I could." I have lived in Austin for more than 20 years. My entire legal career has been spent learning local and State laws while building a family here in Austin. I love Austin and the citizens that live here. I was a prosecutor for over 4 years and left the DPS to become a defense attorney in 2005. After 15 years of practicing criminal defense, I could not imagine doing anything else with my law degree. It is an exciting, fast paced, and always evolving career. I learn something everyday from my collegues, my adversaries, and my clients. I take pride in my work and the representation of my clients. I was born and raised in Iowa, and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1970. I was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1975. I have earned the following university degrees: Bachelor of General Studies (Science) in 1984 from the University of Nebraska at Omaha; Master of Public Administration in 1986 from the University of Nebraska; Master of Political Science in 1989 from the University of Houston; Doctor of Philosophy (Political Science) in 1990 from the University of Houston; and Juris Doctorate in 2002 from Texas Tech University. I won numerous teaching awards during my time as a college professor, but law is my true calling. As one local judge put it, "that guy's going to plead his case no matter what.
