I consider myself a criminal defense trial attorney. Whether it is trying a misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated case to a much more serious felony assault charge, I truly love going to bat for people. My practice consists of representing individuals charged with the full spectrum of criminal offenses. The thing that separates my law practice from most others is that I pride myself on personal service. When dealing with me, phone calls get returned promptly and questions are answered timely. Frequently people tell me that they have never met a lawyer who was so approachable or gave them honest answers about their case until they met me. I invite you to come in for a free consultation. If nothing else, I can promise you will know more about your case than you did when you came in and it won't cost you a dime.
I believe in treating my clients as intelligent equals in a joint venture to solve their problems and improve their lives. This means telling you what you need to know, not what I think you want to hear. It also means explaining law and procedure to you without talking down to you.. I believe in providing more value to my clients than they expect or request. This starts with being accessible and responsive to client needs. It goes beyond diligent preparation and prompt delivery of services. It is the result of taking a real human interest in my clients.. I believe the best lawyers genuinely delight in solving their clients problems and in helping their clients achieve their goals.. I grew up in Houston and obtained my undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, where I majored in political science. I graduated with honors from the Valparaiso University School of Law in 1999. While in law school, I was privileged to clerk at Harper & Rogers, P.C., a premier criminal defense firm in Northwest Indiana. I settled in Austin after law school and worked for a small firm for two years before launching my own practice at the end of 2001.. I am board certified as a specialist in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.. Since 1999, I’ve maintained membership in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. In addition to my law license, which allows me to practice in all state courts in Texas, I am also admitted to practice in the Federal Courts in the Western District of Texas, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
I believe in the jury system and right of every individual and company to have their day in court. After representing thousands of different clients in different matters, the chance to try your case to a jury of your peers is a precious right. This philosphy has guided my representation of clients since I began practicing law.

I am Board Certified in Texas Criminal Law and have practiced in Texas since 1980.
I am approaching my one-year anniversary with the amazing firm of Cofer & Connelly, but I've been practicing law in Texas for twenty years – and managed to hang onto the English accent I was born with! Raised on a farm just outside London, my first career was as a journalist (covering mostly police and crime stories) for about a decade before turning to the law.. Reversing my mother's footsteps, I moved to America in 1995 and attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where I graduated with highest honors from their journalism school. From there, I traded light blue for dark and attended Duke University School of Law, graduating cum laude.. A few years working commercial litigation cases with a big firm in Dallas convinced me that I needed to return to my lifelong interest in all things criminal. I was hired by the Travis County District Attorney's Office in 2006 and in the intervening years I've handled just about every type of criminal case there is. That includes being lead prosecutor on a dozen murder cases (one of them a capital murder case) and trying dozens of felony cases before a jury. One of my specialties is juvenile criminal law, having handled thousands of cases as a prosecutor over a period of five years in that division of the office, from Class B misdemeanors to capital murder and everything in between.. Academic and legal achievements aside, if my name is familiar to you it's likely because I am the author of a series of mystery novels! The first of those, The Bookseller, was published in 2012 and made 's mystery list. Since then, I've published ten novels, and am very excited about a new series starting in August, published by Minotaur/St. Martin's.
I am an indepedent insurance agent and a lawyer. I specialize in commercial property casualty insurance all over Texas.
I am an experienced civil litigation attorney and have been trying cases in front of juries since 2004. My firm is home to a team of first-rate attorneys, paralegals, and support staff, and we enjoy an exceptional reputation here in Austin.

I am a Texas-licensed attorney based in Austin, Texas. My practice focuses on advising clients on complex federal statutes and regulations, including the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"). I also provide legal research and writing services and am available for litigation projects such as brief writing and complex document review.. Prior to starting my own practice, I was a lawyer at Susman Godfrey L.L.P., one of the nation's leading litigation boutique law firms. There, I represented both plaintiffs and defendants -- ranging from smaller businesses to Fortune 500 companies -- in high-stakes commercial litigation in a variety of state and federal jurisdictions. Before entering private law practice, I was a law clerk to the Honorable Karen Nelson Moore on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")I advise employers on the new requirements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare"). I can help your business understand and plan for the new "pay-or-play" employer mandates set to take effect in 2014. Federal regulations and guidance are continually being issued that will affect nearly every employer. I am monitoring these developments and am ready to advise your business on the regulatory requirements and what options are available to you. I can advise your business on questions such as whether your business will be considered a "small" or "large" business under Obamacare; whether your multiple businesses will be treated as a single employer under Obamacare regulations; how full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees will be counted; what penalty your business may be subject to if it does not offer minimal, affordable care under the employer mandate; and various other requirements.
