Joseph E. Cheeley, III, a second-generation attorney from a family of attorneys, graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1980 and has practiced for over 40 years. A native of Gwinnett, Joseph served as Special Master in State Bar disciplinary proceedings by appointment of the Georgia Supreme Court. As Special Assistant Attorney General, he represented the Gwinnett County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) in child custody cases from 1983 until 1999. In addition, Joseph has been attorney of record in over 30 reported cases in the Georgia Supreme Court and Georgia Court of Appeals.. Joseph and his wife, Margaret Cheeley, are active in their church. They are proud parents of their daughter, Kristin Rosencrants, and son, Justin Cheeley, M.D., and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.

I pride myself on being a very compassionate attorney who is capable of tending to all of my clients' Family Law matters.  I help people with all kinds of family law cases: divorce, modification of custody or child support, enforcement of prior orders (also called contempts), adoption, and legitimation/ paternity cases (where the parties were never married but they have a dispute over their children).. I am committed to helping my local community.  I created the Family Law Information Class taught at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in partnership with Gwinnett Legal Aid in 2015.  This class was created to help people represent themselves in a family law case, because I know that attorneys are expensive, and not everyone can afford them.  I still help teach the class.   I am a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars - helping teach my fellow attorney's - for family law matters. I was appointed by the Supreme Court of Georgia as a mentor for new attorneys through the Transition into Law Practice Program.   In 2014, I was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Atlanta Legal Aid Society for my work with the Gwinnett Pro Bono Project and Gwinnett Legal Aid.  In 2015, I was selected to participate in the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) Leadership Academy Class.  In 2017, I was recognized by Atlanta Legal Aid for providing more than 50 pro bono hours to the Gwinnett Pro Bono Project, which is part of Atlanta Legal Aid.  I was the President of the Gwinnett County Bar Association in 2020 - 2021, and served in many leadership roles before that.. I earned my J.D. degree from Tulane University School of Law. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I majored in Religious Studies.  I am the divorced and remarried mother of a blended family. My husband and I have five children ages 20, 18, 17, 15, and 14.

I am one of the few attorneys that understand what it means to work with your hands, to earn a living with hard, physical work.  Prior to enrolling in law school in 2001, I was employed as a commercial electrician; I have also driven a forklift, worked retail and warehousing.  I am proud of my blue-collar background.  I believe that my experience working real jobs, with real people, in all conditions, inside and out, lends me valuable insight on the working man's (and woman's) situation that most attorneys cannot provide.. I have been married since 1996, and have three sons.  Outside of work, my leisure time is centered on my family, including family history, and preserving family photographs and documents.
