It wasn't until my husband and I began the conversation of transferring the family cabin out of my parents' names and into our names that the light bulb went off. The negotiations should be easy, right? They want to sell the cabin, and we want to buy the cabin. Easy. It wasn't easy, and there were far more considerations than any of us anticipated. In the end, we found common ground. We all feel like we've come out on the right side of the deal and, most importantly, feel like the cabin has the protection we wanted. I found myself telling this story often and hearing others' stories. There is a real legal need that exists in Minnesota to transfer this valuable, sentimental asset that we affectionately call "the cabin.". A few years after my personal cabin succession experience, I began counseling families on what cabin succession can (and often should) look like.
