Liana Orta had a decision to make when she graduated from Florida International University – pursue an MBA or go to law school. On paper, it looked like an easy choice: she majored in Finance and International Business. She spent part of her junior year furthering these studies in Sorrento, Italy. She seemed destined to get the MBA and then jump on the first flight back to Europe. But the MBA never really had a chance – Liana needed a profession where she helped people, not corporations. She went to the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law instead.. When Liana graduated from law school, she went to one of the few ‘fresh out of law school’ jobs that offered an immediate and impactful chance to help people – she became an Assistant Public Defender in Florida working with juveniles.. Her experiences with court, children, families in crisis, interviewing, negotiating, and so much more are invaluable. She had more client contact in a week than most attorneys have in a month.. I now maintain a steady caseload of traffic defense cases, mainly focused on Johnston County as well as contributing to the firm's foundational areas of real estate, wills and health care planning directives and contract review.

I am an outdoor enthusiast.  Having grown up in Utah and California I spent a lot of time outdoors hiking and biking.  I grew up tinkering on bikes and became a professional level bike mechanic and ultimately worked as a bike mechanic and tech at a Utah bike shop to pay a significant amount of my way through my Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Utah.  As a student at the University of Utah I always had a fascination with new and innovative products and was introduced to the field of patent law, which, in the field of patent prosecution, by definition, involves constant contact and interaction with new and innovative products.  So far my career has provided me with the opportunity to draft patents ranging from robotic systems for defense companies such as Raytheon, to medical devices such as CPAP machines and auto-injectors for epinephrine, as well as software and other mechanical devices.

I am a very simple, hands on attorney and enjoy becoming involved in all my cases, whether big or small.  For me it's about the people and what I can do to make their situation better.  Witnessing how the law can make a difference after a tragedy is what makes me come to work every day.. One of my favorite things about being an attorney is getting to know each client and becoming very hands-on during their case.    I grew up in a small town in Illinois which became the inspiration for the concept of having a law firm with “Lawyers You Can Talk To.”    I try to keep it simple.  I strive to be honest and hardworking much like the folks from my hometown.   When some of those hardworking people need answers to complicated questions, I want to be the person that provides the answers.  I will be the lawyer they can talk to.   I am not intimidating and prefer my clients call me Dan.   I want my clients to feel comfortable with me and be able to talk with me.  They have been through enough given their injuries and should not feel intimated about speaking with their attorney.. I have found many accident victims are denied access to the attorney and are handed off to staff or an investigator.   If they do get to speak with a lawyer, they don't understand a word of what is said and are too intimidated to ask questions.”. I want to advocate for my client and at the end of their case want that client to say with a smile "Dan looked out for me like family."

From the time John was 8 years old, he wanted to be a lawyer. After living in San Francisco and New York, John spent most of his childhood growing up in North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Campbell University School of Law. While at Campbell, John was named to two national moot court teams, and the law school's faculty recognized him as one of the nation's best, up-and-coming lawyers. After graduating from Campbell with honors, John initially worked for a law firm that defended claims filed by injured people. After seeing from the inside how insurance companies and big business attempt to work the legal system to maximize their own profits, John quickly realized that accident victims needed a strong and aggressive advocate to stand up and fight for them. So, in 1995, he changed firms and since then, he has focused exclusively on representing people throughout the country who have been injured by trucking collisions, medical negligence, defective products, and on-the-job accidents.. Known for his strong work ethic and attention to detail, one of John's most notable achievements occurred in 2000 when he represented a young mother and her daughter in a case against the State of North Carolina for serious injuries that they suffered when their mini-van was struck head-on by a Department of Transportation dump truck. At that time, a damages cap limited the amount of damages that could be recovered from the State of North Carolina to a maximum of $150,000, which was less than half of the mother's medical bills. Through John's efforts and against considerable odds, he was not only able to persuade the General Assembly to increase the cap to $500,000, but he also instituted ground-breaking lawsuits that resulted in the family recovering a settlement that was more than 10 times the amount initially offered by the State.. John is licensed to practice law in all North Carolina federal and state courts, and he is a very active member of the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. John devotes a considerable amount of his time to teaching legal concepts and advocacy skills to other attorneys and law students, and his articles are frequently published throughout the State..
