Firm: Sodoma Law

The nicest compliment I’ve ever received about Sodoma Law was from a judge who described us as “smart, tenacious, and compassionate.” When clients come to us in the middle of a divorce or a custody battle, they deserve that blend of qualities from each of our family law attorneys. They need family law attorneys who will fight for them in the courtroom and empower them to achieve their goals at a difficult time in their lives.. When I opened the doors to Sodoma Law in 2008, I wanted to build a team who would help every client navigate the hurdles of separation and divorce with empathy and determination – in and out of court. I wanted to surround myself with people who live and breathe family law like I do. This practice is my passion; it’s not my job, but rather, who I am.. In hindsight, I have to believe that the events of my childhood led me on this path. I often joke with my family that my experience as a child of parents with “irreconcilable differences” predestined my career. As a family law attorney, I feel the advantage of understanding the experience of separation and divorce through the eyes of an adult and as a young girl. That experience was fraught with anxiety, especially at the beginning. I believe it’s our job, as family law attorneys, to educate our clients on their various legal options so as to reduce that anxiety and allow them to feel more in control of their cases. At our firm, each attorney and staff member believes not only in their ability to make a difference in a client’s life but also their ability to be supportive of a client’s emotional, spiritual and physical well being.. After more than a decade of practicing as a family law attorney, I know that when our clients contact us, they are typically making one of the biggest decisions of their lives. They each have somehow empowered themselves enough to make the journey to change what he or she has known…whether it was for one year or twenty years. I understand it is not always hard for everyone, but change affects us all. I see it with my clients. I saw it with my own parents.. Working with someone you trust is critical. From the moment we discuss your case, you will know that I will always do my absolute best to handle your concerns as if they are my own.

My greatest attribute is the ability to fully invest myself in my clients. To a client, this means that I will do everything possible to understand your needs, to stand up and advocate for your interests, to fine tune every detail of documents created on your behalf, and to secure a favorable outcome in your case.  I understand that when a client comes to our law firm, they are often feeling stress, whether from a difficult family issue, being a defendant in a criminal matter, or trying to plan for the future of their loved ones.  My goal is to alleviate as much of this stress as possible by providing a clear path and a helping hand through difficult legal matters.. My prior professional experience has paved the way for my transition into the practice of law.  While living in the Washington, DC area for five years, I fine tuned my negotiation skills by serving as an advocate for government contractors in complex price negotiations with the federal government on product and service contracts.  The art of negotiation comes into play often in my practice, and whether working on a separation agreement, consent order, divorce settlement, or directly with a district attorney in a criminal matter, my goal is to secure the best possible outcome for my clients.. After moving to Charlotte, NC, I worked in with Wachovia Securities/Wells Fargo Advisors as a financial advisor.  My finance experience, combined with my degree in Business Administration from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill, lends itself nicely to my law practice when discussing assets and retirement accounts with my Estate Planning clients, and when working through financial documentation in child support, alimony, and equitable distribution cases.  My time as a financial advisor also taught me the importance of protecting the interests of those I represent, listening closely to the needs of my clients, and the role communication plays in a trusted professional relationship.. The lessons and skills learned from previous experiences are the pillars of my law practice.  The actual foundation of my law practice is following the golden rule.  I understand that during tough times, people need and deserve accessible advocacy and personalized attention, and that any time a client calls or sends me an email, a response is anxiously awaited.  I therefore make it a point to always keep my clients consistently updated on the status of their case, and return all phone calls and all emails on the same day received...no excuses.

Licensed in NC and SC | Certified Mediator for NC and SC Divorce Cases | NC Board Certified Family Law Specialist. When I was just starting out as a young family law attorney an opposing counsel who shall remain nameless referred to me as an “ankle-biting bulldog with lipstick.” Funny? Of course. Offensive? Maybe a little. True? It depends.. I trained in my early years with two drastically different attorneys. The first was one of the most feared and well-known family law attorneys around. Mistakes were not acceptable. I often wondered if I would ever get it right as multiple red-inked revisions to my drafts (with expletives) bounced back to me. Over and over again. The writing style was simplistic, but so powerful. Not legal words, but plain and direct statements that cut right to the heart of the analysis of any issue. Litigation was like performance art. Clients paid generously to be in a courtroom with him and they got a show if it became necessary.. The other attorney was a well-respected leader in the collaborative law movement. She taught me the value of professionalism, mediation and client-driven resolutions. She was the anti-thesis of the other approach, but equally and fiercely strong in her own element.. In working with these two polar opposites, I grew into my own style and voice somewhere between “kill them with kindness” unless and until you need to “slay the dragon.” I believe in the practice of law as an art form. Our clients deserve bespoke documents that are as unique as their circumstances; they deserve those well-crafted documents explained to them in a way they can understand; and they deserve our respect and attention during what is very likely a traumatic time. And, if they need it, they deserve a skilled litigator who will come to court more than prepared to advocate for their position.. I am a collector of life experiences and a firm believer that you should seize every opportunity you can to learn and grow. I have gone on from those early days to progress from an attorney managing my own case load, to a litigation manager for an international firm managing multiple Southeastern offices, to my current role as a Principal with my Sodoma Law family which includes training new associates who started out just like me. Although I have been practicing family law for more than 15 years in these changing roles, I do not take for granted the need to be flexible in my approach. What worked in one case may not be productive or progressive in another. It’s our job to figure out what does work for you.. My first step as your family law attorney involves a consultation, but in reality this is a conversation where we talk about your goals and what brought you to my office for family law advice. I will educate and empower you to make good decisions in what is likely a less than desirable situation. I provide options and advice. You make choices. To have an element of control, at least over the chosen path forward, is the beginning of the next phase of your journey. Let’s talk about where you want to go.

I grew up in a small, rural town in North Carolina where family is an essential aspect of everyone’s life. I came to value the importance of family and what it means when a family goes through a divorce or custody dispute. All families see challenges in many forms from time to time. I realized that more than anything, I just wanted to help all involved. This inspired me to be the first in my family to complete my undergraduate studies. After attending Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina and working around Charlotte, I knew I wanted my life to have a deeper impact. I then attended Charlotte School of Law in Charlotte, North Carolina to obtain my juris doctorate. This helped me to reach my goal be able to advocate for and assist the people of North Carolina and help those families I had come to love.. As an attorney, my goal is for each client to find peace and a reasonable resolution for their family. As an advocate for my clients, I want them to be heard but also empowered with the facts and laws surrounding their case so we can work together to find a path forward. I’ve watched the detrimental effects that pro-longed litigation can cause on a family unit both, emotionally and financially. I understand that people come to me in some of their darkest times for help and that they want to move forward in a positive light; I have the tools and power to help them do so. I appreciate the opportunity to get to know your family and entrusting me with managing healthy expectations and goals for your case.. I pride myself on being professional and prepared for the task at hand. I enjoy getting to know clients through this process. My passion for helping others extends beyond the legal realm. I have been involved in raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association for several years as it is an organization that is near to my heart. Additionally, I use my talents to help victims in domestic violence situations through volunteering with Safe Alliance and by helping children through the Council for Children’s Rights.. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling and spending time with my husband, our two children, and our three dogs. I also enjoy running and listening to a good podcast!

I am the lawyer for you if you want to resolve your divorce or custody case without going through a nasty court battle. As your attorney, I will be on your side throughout the case. What does this mean for you? It means that I will work with you throughout your case to make sure you obtain the best possible settlement. I am a keen believer that your family issues should be resolved by ensuring that you have control over the outcome rather than a stranger, such as a Judge. While we have some excellent judges in Mecklenburg, Gaston, and the surrounding counties, I encourage my clients to work hard to resolve their issues through mediation, collaborative law sessions, settlement meetings or judicial settlement conferences.. You might be wondering what happens if we cannot settle outside of court. If we cannot settle your case, then we fight.  I have had the opportunity to attend some of the best trial advocacy training programs in the country. I am a graduate of the NITA Family Trial Advocacy Institute, which admits only 40 students each year. If we cannot resolve your case outside of court, you can trust that I will aggressively represent you in trial.. I am a local girl. I was born and raised in Lincolnton, North Carolina where my father’s roots go back hundreds of years. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am one of four children, who is fortunate enough to have been raised by long-married parents in a home full of books, art, and music. I understand the importance of stability in the home, and I’m dedicated to helping families smoothly navigate the turbulence of divorce. I joined the McIlveen Family Law Firm in the spring of 2013 and have worked diligently as an Associate Attorney and now, a Senior Associate Attorney.

Firm: Osborn Conflict Resolution

I am passionate about using my training as a mediator and collaborative lawyer (and my time having taught negotiaiton & conflict resolution skills in law school and continuing legal education) to help people and businesses resolve complex disputes in as cost-effective a manner as possible.. Conflict is always expensive-- particularly in terms of the time, stress, energy, and money that often have to be spent dealing with it. The litgaition process is one way to resolve conflict and disputes, but it is not the only way.  And it is rarely if ever the most efficient, quickest, affordable, or enjoyable way. Not a single client has ever approached me after a trial or after having his or her deposition taken and said, "Wow, that was so much fun!  Let's do it again soon, shall we?" And never has a client who paid me to take a matter all the way through depositions, hearings, and trial ever thought I didn't get paid enough for my efforts, and decided to throw in a little something extra for my efforts because he or she felt bad for me.. If you allow our firm the privilege of reviewing your complex family law or business or probate administration dipsute, we will be sure to evaluate all the options avaialble for protecting or enforcing your rights. If your case is a fit for a collborative law approah, anf the other side can be persuaded to come to the same conlcusion--for the sake of saving everyone time, money, and stress, then we are uniquiely positioned to assit If filing a suit--or defending yourself in one that has already been filed against you-- is the most cost-effective means of addressing the situation, given the amount in controversy, personalities, interpersonal dynamics, and complexity of the legal issues presented, then we will pursure that route vigorously.  But we will always keep our eyes open for avenues of resolving the dispute more quickly or affordably, whenever possible--whether thru mediaiton or some form of collaborative law process.

Firm: Conrad Trosch & Kemmy, P.A.

After being raised by a family of lawyers, including my mother, father, grandfather, two brothers, and an uncle, I initially decided to be anything but a lawyer. However, while exploring graduate school in a number of other areas, I took a number of career assessment tests which overwhelmingly concluded that a career as either a lawyer or a teacher would be a good fit for me. I feel like practicing Family Law allows me to be both – I am able to help clients by educating them about the law and by handling complex legal issues on their behalf. I am a part of the third generation of attorneys to practice at Conrad Trosch and Kemmy and am now a partner at the firm. I have pushed myself to become and expert in family law.  My first goal was to be a Board Certified Family Law Specialist, which I did in 2010.  I have taken the opportunity to teach other lawyers the nuances of Family Law and authored the book: Divorce in North Carolina – Answers to Your Legal Questions, which answers over two hundred of the thousands of questions that have been posed to me over the years.. I am not a one-trick pony unless the pony is called common sense. I take an approach to my practice that causes me to wear a lot of hats. I am an aggressive advocate when necessary, but I also I help my clients see that settling their case is a reasonable way out of court. I think quickly on my feet, which allows me to perform well not only in litigation, but also in a stressful time-sensitive negotiation. What I enjoy the most about Family Law is that it encompasses so many other areas of the law. A Family Law attorney also needs to understand Real Estate Law, Estate Planning, Business Law, Tax Law, Criminal Law, and Bankruptcy, just to name a few. I enjoy the constant intellectual challenge.. My goal is always to give my client the peace of resolution in the least damaging way possible to their family. The most rewarding part of my practice is seeing my clients, who have just gone through one of the most difficult times of their lives, with a smile of relief because their case is resolved. It is that “light at the end of the tunnel” moment that keeps my clients and me pushing forward toward resolution.. My wife, Elizabeth Trosch, is Mecklenburg County’s Chief District Court Judge, and we have two sons. When one of my sons was about three years old, he asked me if he could have some candy before dinner. I told him no and sent him on his way. As is the case with children, he went around the corner to my wife and asked her the same question. She quizzed him, “What did your father say when you asked him?” My son paused and then said, “Well you see Mommy, you are a judge and Daddy’s just a lawyer. Don’t judges just tell lawyers what to do?” Despite his clever “lawyering,” she denied his request. Ultimately, if parties cannot agree, then the only way to have your case resolved sometimes is to have a judge make the final decision. I want to get the best result for my client’s individual situation, and the key is that I do not use only one “tool” all the time. The thing that sets me apart from other Family Law attorneys is that I know what tools I have in my toolbox and when to use them.

"The way that  I represent my clients is pretty simple really. I treat my clients the way that I'd want to be treated if I were in their shoes.  I listen to my clients carefully and then help them define reasonable goals and expectations. Then I work to the best of my ability to achieve the goals we establish. Sometimes those goals can be achieved outside of the courthouse. Sometimes it is necessary for a Judge to decide the issues. But in every instance, my clients know that they have a hard-working, honest and experienced attorney on their side."
