I have been a Trial Attorney in Chicago since 1986. I have represented injured individuals in personal injury cases for the entirety of my career. I handle cases involving Medical Malpractice, Nursing Home injuries, Auto Accidents, Products Liability and Workers Compensation. The firm as a whole, and myself individually, pride ourselves on working cases toward settlement if possible, and the ability to go to Trial on the case if a fair settlement offer isn't made. We are also happy to pay referral fees to attorneys who send injury cases our way.
I was raised on the Northwest side of Chicago by hard working blue-collar parents that both worked full time to support our family. I have seen firsthand the frustration and difficulties people face when living paycheck to paycheck trying to support a family. I have also seen the burden placed on a family when one of the bread winners is injured and cannot work. When I was a child, my father was injured by a defective and improperly maintained step right outside our apartment. His injury required that he wear a cast on his leg. As a delivery driver, this meant he could not work to support us. He initially did not know what to do. I would hear him and my mother ask each other: Who will pay the medical bills? How will we survive on one paycheck? Who will pay us while you are off work? How will we make the rent next month? How will the kids eat? For a long time, these questions went unanswered. I saw my family in the lowest of lows ever experienced. Savings were depleted. They borrowed money from anyone they could. These hard working parents having to borrow money to stay afloat really made them feel as if they lost their dignity. It wasn't until they found a personal injury attorney who was able to help them get their life back on track. My father's bills were paid, his lost wages, were compensated, he received a settlement, and he was able to pay back all of his loans. More importantly, he regained his dignity. I knew right there that I wanted to be a lawyer that would fight for injured people and help them get their life back on track if they ever suffered the misfortune of being hurt while working or as a result of someone else’s carelessness.. I graduated from Loyola University School of Law here in Chicago with Honors and an emphasis on Trial Advocacy. I received a Certificate in Trial Advocacy and the CALI Award for Litigation Technology. When I graduated from law school, my goal was simple, help injured people regain their dignity and get their life back on track. I understand the difficulties families face when someone is injured. I understand that a personal injury claim is not only about money. I understand that when you are hurt, you will have multiple questions and concerns that will need to be addressed. Having lived through it first hand, I can help you answer those difficult questions and help you regain your dignity.
I grew up in the Andersonville Neighborhood of Chicago. My father and his parents were immigrants from Scandinavia. My father left Norway just prior to the Nazi invasion of Norway. He told me that he got out on the "last boat" that made it out. He studied law and was a Federal Prosecutor. He was asked by John F. Kennedy to start the first Federal Defender Program here in Chicago. My father then became a Judge. I am the oldest of 6 brothers and sisters and attended St. Ignatius High School. I spent one year living in Spain and studying at La Universidad de Sevilla, in Seville Spain where I studied Spanish History and literature and became fluent in Spanish. Sadly, my father was killed in an accident after my freshman year. I graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston with an English and Spanish major with a focus on literature. I supported myself as a commercial fisherman in Kodiak, Alaska, working on the boat, the Lopez Isle. After graduating from Northwestern, I spent a year teaching high school Latin and Literature at Northridge Prep. I attended Law School at DePaul University, where I graduated. I started working for a large law firm in California, doing Insurance Defense Work in the area of Personal injury, including legal and medical malpractice defense. I later returned to Illinois and began working as an attorney doing insurance defense work in Automobile accidents, dram shop cases, business slip and falls, trip and falls, food poisoning, dog bite cases and other negligence cases. During this time I did approximately 1000 arbitrations and became an arbitrator myself. I tried many cases in front of judges and tried approximately 30 cases in front of juries in varies counties throughout Illinois. Around 1996 I shifted my focus to the plaintiff's side and began representing plaintiffs in personal injury actions. In 1997, my brother John, a former prosecutor joined my office and we became Berg & Berg. We have had several multi million dollar judgments and millions of dollars in settlements. I focus on serious personal injury cases, including wrongful death and survival action cases. I enjoy a good jury trial but also appreciate the benefits of mediation, arbitration and settlement when appropriate. Since, I have worked as a defense attorney and as a Plaintiff's attorney, I believe that I have the ability to be objective and see both sides of the case.
I founded Gardiner Koch Weisberg and Wrona in 1992.
I enjoy helping individuals, families, and providers. As a health law and appellate lawyer, I handle many personal matters involving health care, estate planning, guardianship, insurance, appeals, and other civil cases.
