I greatly enjoy practicing family law. The majority of my cases are pre-decree divorce, post-decree divorce, custody, child support, parentage, and adoption cases.  I also draft and review pre-marital agreements and take family law appeals cases, including DCFS appeals cases.  I am licensed to and have practiced in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. I also was involved in a case where Writ of Cert was requested in the Supreme Court of the United States.  I strive to achieve the best results possible for my clients but will also be straightforward and honest with them about the cost-effectiveness of their goals as well as their likelihood of success.  I do not oversell or overpromise as we are attorneys, and not fortune tellers. I firmly believe that communication is the key to a successful attorney-client relationship and I strive to ensure that all of my clients feel that they are listened to and well represented.  I also handle a substantial amount of military family law cases, which can have more complex financial issues than an average divorce.. Prior to practicing family law I was a clerk for a boutique family law firm, as well as a law clerk for a Cook County Domestic Relations Judge.  I enjoy participating in networking events and meeting new people.  I practice primarily in Cook County, DuPage County and Lake County. I recently was invited to guest lecture for a Family Law class at the John Marshall Law School on the topic of pre-marital agreements.

Having spent my entire 42-year career in a law firm with a strong and prominent family law department, as well as a boutique commercial litigation group, I have been able to concentrate my practice in both areas. As matrimonial law has become more complex and often involves financial issues similar to what I deal with in the commercial arena, my experience in each area enhances the other. Beermann LLP has many skilled and dedicated attorneys who work with me on cases as needed.. Although I settle the vast majority of my cases (which is my main goal and usually in the client's best interest), I have extensive trial and appellate experience, including approximately 200 appeals in the state and federal appellate courts. Much of my appellate work involves referrals from other attorneys.. My family law practice includes prenuptial agreements and every aspect of parentage (paternity) and divorce, including complex financial cases, child custody and removal, and post-decree. I have represented clients nationwide in family law and other matters on a pro hac vice basis, as well as in international child custody and other family law disputes. In addition to traditional litigation, I represent clients in various Alternate Dispute Resolution Methods, including mediation and Cooperative Law to achieve fair settlements in an amicable and cost-effective way.. I am a Past President of the Appellate Lawyers Association of Illinois and have lectured and published widely on appeals, family law topics, and other legal subjects.. I am recognized in The Best Lawyers in America in the categories of family law and appellate law; by the Leading Lawyers Network in family law and civil appeals; Marquis' Who's Who in America (2011); and as an Illinois Super Lawyer in family law in Chicago Magazine every year since 2005. I rated "AV Preeminent" under the Martindale-Hubbell ® Lawyer Rating System (5.0 out of 5), based on performance in the following key areas: legal knowledge, analyticial abilities, judgment, communication ability, and legal experience.

Effective appellate advocacy requires specialized skills to analyze the pertinent legal issues and see the case the way appellate justices do, ensuring that the law and applicable procedure were followed in the trial court.  An effective appellate lawyer must be well-versed in pertinent case law and applicable procedural rules, with the ability to identify those issues and arguments which are likely to be most successful.   Ms. Jochner is such a lawyer.. Ms. Jochner served for 15 years as a judicial law clerk to two Justices of the Illinois Supreme Court: the late Hon. Mary Ann G. McMorrow and the Hon. Charles E. Freeman.   During her tenure  with our State's highest tribunal, she has worked on numerous high-profile matters involving cutting-edge issues of first impression, providing her with a unique breadth and depth of experience in all areas of substantive law combined with a keen understanding of the mechanics of our courts of review.   Her first-hand experience and crucial insights into the State appellate court system provide her with the basis to craft and communicate compelling appellate strategy and arguments.. A recognized legal scholar, expert writer and educator to law students and attorneys, Ms. Jochner has authored more than 150 articles on a wide array of legal topics appearing in publications nationwide, and her two columns, “Law From a Different Perspective” and "On Appeal," appear regularly in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.  In addition, she is listed in several “Who’s Who” publications, and was previously recognized as one of “40 Illinois Attorneys Under 40 to Watch” by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.  She also regularly speaks on legal issues to various groups across the State, including seminars on effective legal writing and appellate advocacy.   In addition, for the last decade, she has appeared as part of the “Illinois Law” television broadcasts as a panelist for that series’ annual review of United States Supreme Court decisions.  She has also served as an adjunct professor at both DePaul University College of Law and The John Marshall Law School.  In testament to her career-long commitment to legal education, The Illinois Supreme Court appointed Ms. Jochner to serve on its Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) Board.. As a well-known leader in the Chicago legal community, she is active with many organizations, including the Chicago Bar Association (CBA), where she serves as a member of both the Executive Committee of the CBA’s Alliance for Women and of the Editorial Board of the CBA Record, and chairs the CBA's Committee on Public Affairs.   She is similarly active with the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA), where she is a past member of the Board of Governors and the Editorial Board of the Illinois Bar Journal.  Currently, she is a co-editor of both the Bench & Bar Newsletter and Trial Briefs, serves as a member of the Family Law Section Council, and is an elected member of the ISBA Assembly.
