How frustrating it can be working with a lawyer who doesn’t get back to you and seems to only care about sending an invoice. That’s not me. That's not how I represent clients.. By way of background, I am admitted to practice in both the federal and state courts of Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Before I entered private practice, I clerked for the Honorable C. Theodore Fritsch, Jr. of the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas where I received an amazing education in a variety of practice areas.

I provide legal assistance to Stephan Zouras, LLP clients with employment, consumer protection and personal injury matters.  I represent individuals in Illinois and throughout the United States on an individual, class and collective action basis regarding issues arising under federal and state wage and hour laws, including the Fair Labor Standards Act ("FLSA") and comparable state wage laws, mass torts, consumer protection, personal injury and other complex litigation.  I have been recognized by Super Lawyers Magazine as an Illinois "Rising Star" in each consecutive year since 2014, a distinction given to no more than 2.5% of Illinois lawyers.

I pride myself on being accessable to my clients at their convenience.  I have always believed that a client should be able to contact me with any questions that they have and that I have an obligation to respond quickly.. I have given my cell phone number many, many times so that I can be reached as needed.  I find that clients appreciate that personal touch.  Often times I return calls late at night or on weekends if that's the only available time.. My concentration is Workers' Compensation law.  After 31 years in this practice I would like to say that I've seen it all, but I'm sure that I have not.. Each day presents a new challange and new clients with their own specific, important problems.. On a personal level, if I'm not working I can be found riding one of my several bicycles.  I average 200 miles per week in the summer and less in the winter but will still go out as long as it's not too slippery.. I belong to several bike clubs in the area that vary in distance in speed.  One of the groups is a racing group and another is a travel group.  With the second group I have ridden in California, South Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, Toronto and Montreal.  We are currently planning next year's ride.

I have over 30 years of experience as a trial lawyer, almost all of it spent exclusively handling medical malpractice cases. After getting my law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois, in 1988, I moved to Arizona where I worked as a medical malpractice defense lawyer. I stayed there until 1994 when I returned to Chicago and worked briefly for Chicago’s Seyfarth, Shaw doing general commercial litigation work. I quickly discovered that big, commercial case litigation as well as the large law firm life were not for me.. In 1995, I returned to my trial lawyer roots and joined Cirignani, Heller & Harman where I once again specialize in medical malpractice cases. Both of my law partners have medical backgrounds: Stan is a medical doctor, and Jim was once a respiratory therapist. When I say that I specialize in medical malpractice I mean that it is the only kind of work my firm and I do. We don’t handle auto accidents, slip and falls, product liability, truck accidents, plane and train accident cases—only medical malpractice. Personally, I made the choice to focus my efforts on medical litigation alone because when I was a defense lawyer representing doctors and hospitals I saw first-hand how the experience and expertise of the plaintiff’s lawyer mattered more than anything else to a successful outcome for victims of medical malpractice.. Since returning to medical litigation, I’ve successfully handled a wide variety of medical malpractice cases, including: birth injuries like cerebral palsy, operating room fires, brain injuries, hospital mistakes, medication mistakes, misdiagnoses, stroke injuries, spinal cord injuries, paralysis injuries, anesthesia injuries, and wrongful death.

I have an MBA in marketing and finance coupled with a successful career in applications engineering and marketing. I approach client issues from both a legal and a business perspective, working effectively as a team with inventors, business managers and legal counsel to achieve the best outcome.

I concentrate my practice in civil litigation with an emphasis on complex commercial matters and professional negligence defense.  I have defended professional misconduct claims brought against attorneys and insurance brokers.  I also have represented clients in matters involving trademark infringement and trade secret misappropriation and have worked closely with both employees and employers on issues related to restrictive covenants contained in employment agreements.. I have been involved in all stages of litigation at both the trial and appellate level.  I have successfully briefed and argued summary judgment motions in state and federal court.  I have deposed and defended the depositions of key fact and expert witnesses.   I have prepared cases for trial and have participated in formal mediation proceedings.. While attending law school, I served as the Research Editor of the Loyola University Law Journal and won the distinction of being named best respondent in the 2003 Niagara International Moot Court Competition.  In 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013, I was selected for inclusion in the Super Lawyer’s list of Illinois Rising Stars.. I am a member of the Chicago Bar Association and the American Bar Association.  I also am a member of the Jewish Council for Youth Services’ (JCYS) Board of Directors.  JCYS provides educational and recreational services for children and teens in and around Chicago.

I have experience working on a wide range of employment cases, including class and collective action wage and hour disputes and employment discrimination cases. With a strong knowledge of the Fair Labor Standards Act, I help clients recover unpaid wages when minimum wage and overtime laws are violated.. My background includes working for the Shakman Monitor for the City of Chicago, monitoring the City's hiring practices and making recommendations for policy and procedural reforms. I also worked at Chicago Kent's Employment Law Clinic and served as an extern for United States Magistrate Judge Susan E. Cox. In addition, I have experience with social security disability benefit laws, as well as medical malpractice, personal injury, and nursing home litigation.

I am the Managing Member of the firm and have been advising families, businesses and non-profits for over 10 years.. Prior to founding the firm, I practiced law in the Chicago area as Vice President and Senior Legal Counsel working with such firms as Harley-Davidson Financial Services, The Northern Trust Company and Harbor Capital Advisors. During that time, my law practice focused primarily in the areas of securities regulation (mutual funds, commodity pools, collective investment trusts and private funds), trusts and estates, corporate law, banking and finance, employment law and trademarks and copyrights. In 2010, I was published in the Mutual Fund Service Guide with an article analyzing recent changes to money market mutual funds.. From 2008-2014, I was on the Board of Directors of Amate House, a Chicago-area non-profit with annual revenue of nearly $1 million, serving in the roles of President, Vice President, Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair. I have also provided pro bono legal services in the area of real estate and probate with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services.. I attended law school at the University of Iowa College of Law where I received the Willard Boyd Service Distinction Highest Honors and was the Treasurer of the Iowa Student Bar Association. Prior to law school, I was a Senior Accountant with State Street Bank. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Business Administration.
