Ms. Lichter is AILA’s liaison to the American Bar Association’s Commission on Immigration and serves on the Federal Bar Association’s Immigration Law Section Advisory Board. Ms. Lichter recently served on the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) Task Force on ICE’s Secure Communities program, reporting to findings on the ICE enforcement initiative to DHS Secretary Napolitano. Based in Denver, she is the former Chair of AILA’s Colorado Chapter. Ms. Lichter’s practice focuses on the representation of foreign nationals in removal proceedings, contested family and naturalization applications, administrative appeals, and related federal district and appellate court litigation. A nationally-recognized mentor and immigration law expert, Ms. Lichter is a respected author who lectures throughout the United States on cutting edge immigration issues. Kate's entire legal career is dedicated to the protection of the rights of children and parents. In various positions she has worked for the past 15 years representing children and parents who have become involved in our legal system, including but not limited to our juvenile court system. She has been involved in over 500 cases where she has been tasked with investigating and making determinations specific to substance abuse, sex abuse, domestic violence, mental illness and much more.. Kate started her legal career at the Arapahoe County Attorney's office, in cases specific to Colorado's Dependency and Neglect, Mental Health and Probate system.. Kate attended Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington, where she was involved as a CASA child advocate volunteer, and where she chaired the juvenile law club. After graduating and becoming licensed as an attorney in the State of Colorado, Kate went on to be a Guardian ad Litem and Respondent Parent Counsel in numerous jurisdictions in the metro area. Kate's unique perspective comes from working on all sides of child protection issues. Today, she handles cases in family court, juvenile court, probate court, as well as education law matters, and collaborative law and mediation/non-litigation efforts.

I lead the family law practice at Kontnik | Cohen, LLC. I began my legal career working alongside a judge in a state trial court, and then moved up to federal appellate court (1 level below the U.S. Supreme Court). Flowing from these judicial experiences is a unique legal perspective that I rely upon in all cases. I believe that the best outcomes are the result of a diligent and detailed preparation. Favorable outcomes in and out of court are fueled long before settlement conferences and trials. I have had many favorable outcomes inside the courtroom but am equally experienced in mediation and negotiation. I approach all cases with a high attention to detail and an eye towards settlement.. My primary focus and passion is undoubtedly family law.
