Being charged with a crime puts your life in the hands of a judicial system that all too often does not care about the truth - the truth of who you are, the truth of what happened, the truth of what a conviction would mean for you and your loved ones. It is an experience that is terrifying and leaves you feeling lost, powerless, and unheard.. I've dedicated my life to being a voice for the accused, because the truth is no matter the situation, you also have a story to tell and deserve to be heard. Whether that means fighting at trial to show your innocence, litigating to protect your constitutional rights, or finding a way to present you and your life to a prosecutor to obtain a favorable plea deal, I have the skills and experience necessary to guide you through the system and make sure your truth is heard.. During my years as a public defender and in private practice, I have represented thousands of clients, on cases ranging from minor traffic offenses and DUI's to homicides and sexual assaults. I have won difficult cases with not guilty verdicts at jury trials, by winning hard-fought motions issues that force a dismissal, by convincing prosecutors to drop charges through investigation and mitigating, by challenging probable cause at preliminary hearings, and by successfully litigating for post-conviction relief.. There is nowhere I am more comfortable than in a courtroom arguing to a jury. I have extensive experience as a trial lawyer, starting with winning my first jury trial at the age of 23 in the CU Law criminal defense clinic and representing my law school at nationals for mock trial -- a team that I now proudly coach at competitions across the country. As a public defender, I completed the Colorado "boot camp" and was trained on the acclaimed "Colorado Method" for jury selection that was developed from death penalty defense work. I’m a Colorado native, although you’d never know it as I spent the majority of my life travelling from place to place with my family. Every new school taught me how to relate to people as individuals, which is how I found my way into family law.. As a child of divorced parents, I recognize the challenges that stem from family systems change. I chose to pursue a legal career in domestic relations law in order to help guide families through change, teach families how to avoid relationship breakdown, and create paradigms to keep families together.. I returned to Colorado in 2000 as a Division I lacrosse player at the University of Denver. As a lifelong athlete, I’ve learned the meaning of the words discipline, commitment, and excellence. Off the field, I earned a B.A. in Psychology as well as the University of Denver’s Shaklee-Trowill Research Award for my work in trauma and stress studies.. My family settled in Minneapolis and I travelled home to complete by legal studies at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. While in law school I took advantage of every opportunity I could to work with families in a state of transition.. As a law clerk with the Battered Women’s Legal Advocacy Project, I obtained protective orders for women struggling with domestic abuse. I also worked with women seeking asylum and other immigration refuge under the Violence Against Women Act. My commitment to working in underserved communities resulted in over 500 hours of public service during my law school career.. Families come in many shapes and sizes and I pride myself on understanding the needs of even the most non-traditional families. I advocate for creative problem solving and preventative legal strategies. I’ve created and drafted innovative prenuptial agreements and domestic partnership agreements to plan, protect, and preserve the future of several non-traditional families.. I believe it is important to not only have the emotional commitment to family law, but the economic commitment as well. After law school, I returned to the University of Denver to complete my LLM in Taxation. The division of joint finances, property, and other assets can have a lasting effect after a divorce is final. The emotional toll of divorce is difficult enough without worrying about the ongoing tax implications of property division. My taxation background allows me to spot potential financial issues before they become a problem.. My partner and I live in South East Denver with our four year-old English bulldog. Most weekends I can be found playing flag football, hiking, camping, skiing, and creating craft beer in my kitchen.

I love practicing law because I love people and because, to me, the highest calling of an attorney is to make sure that our system of justice works for everyone in our society. As a plaintiff's attorney I represent individuals, often against powerful and wealthy corporations and insurance companies. That this is possible, thanks to the American jury system, is part of the American dream.

I assist clients in resolving commercial, organizational and personal disputes through negotiation, mediation and, when necessary, litigation. I am a trained, neutral mediator and as both an advocate and mediator have successfully resolved many complex disputes without litigation.. I approach my clients first as a business or businessperson with many interests and concerns apart from the legal issues on which my counsel and advice are sought. I work to develop an understanding and appreciation of my client’s broader business concerns and interests so that my legal counsel and services make business sense and fit my client’s overall business positioning and strategy. I am viewed by my clients as a valued advisor to their ongoing business interests and concerns.

I recently volunteered as a reading buddy for third graders, and served on a philanthropic grant-making board for the Rose Community Foundation.
I believe the only way to secure any meaningful justice for someone is to be ready and willing to take his or her case to trial. I only represent people I care about, trust and believe in. I maintain a small caseload so I am ready, willing and able to go the distance for each of my clients.
I am originally from Kentucky and have lived in Colorado for 18 years. I have had an opportunity to live all across this great state from the Denver Metro Area to Durango and points in between. I am truly thankful for the variety of legal experiences that I have had throughout my career and I think it has shaped the way that I practice law. I have made it my goal to practice with integrity and professionalism because I recognize that reflects not only on me but on my clients. My goal is to give my clients as much information as possible to enable them to make the informed decisions necessary to accomplish their goals and solve their legal issues.
I am a trial lawyer and have successfully tried both civil and criminal cases for thirty years. I have won murder trials, many other felonies, and countless misdemeanors and I have also been active in community service throughout my career, having been a founder of the Art Students League of Denver, , Chaired the Denver section of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) in Colorado, among others.. Creativity in Law is necessary.. To be an excellent lawyer, you need to be creative. As a litigator, I need to be creative in coming up with arguments on behalf of my clients, in applying case law to those arguments, and even in determining what defenses to bring. It means I bring creativity to my cases and expertise in ways that build the best possible defenses and strategies. I have helped many lawyers manage and evaluate their cases in the most creative way possible to prepare for and win even the most difficult trials.. I am also a creative artist and oil painter, painting nearly every day. The practice of painting keeps me happy and energized for my daily law practice.
I am a seasoned litigator who focuses on getting the best result for every client.
