Tom was born and raised in Hampton, Iowa and comes from a family of attorneys. Tom's father was a general practice attorney in Hampton, Iowa, for almost 50 years. Tom's older brother, Jim, was Governor Tom Vilsack's first appointment to the District Court bench.. Tom has been married to Julie (Steidl) Drew since 1984. Julie is currently a chef instructor in the Culinary Arts Department of DMACC. Tom and Julie's son and daughter are graduates of the University of Iowa. His daughter obtained her Master's Degree from Depaul University and is currently employed by a State University. His son sells real estate development ground and completed his MBA from the University of Iowa. Tom is expecting his first grandchild soon.. When not working, Tom enjoys flying airplanes and is an Airline Transport Rated Pilot and a Certified Instrument Flight Instructor. Kate was born and raised in Waukee, Iowa. She graduated from Waukee Senior High School in 2010. Kate attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, graduating with a buiness degree after studying abroad for one year in Hamburg, Germany. After ASU, she attended Drake Law School, where she completed her education in May 2018. While at Drake, Kate was involved in the Animal Rights group as the vice president and the International Law Socitety as the vice president.  She also took on clients at the Drake legal clinic for criminal defense for simple misdemeanors including theft, harassment, and possession.  Kate's last summer of law school was spent studying law in Nantes, France for the summer participating in mediations with international students and learning about European Union law.. The judge agreed with Gina that the man should never have been approached by police to begin with, and so the police had violated the man’s constitutional rights. • Not guilty verdict: A Polk County jury deliberated for only 15 minutes before finding Gina’s client Keilon Hill NOT GUILTY of harassment of a public official. Mr. Hill was canvassing for a political candidate in West Des Moines when a local resident reported him as a “suspicious person.” Mr. Hill repeatedly asked the responding officer if he had broken any laws and received no answer. The officer arrested Mr. Hill after Mr. Hill asked the officer to leave him alone and walked away. The jury agreed with Gina that asserting your right to be left alone is not a crime. • Murder conviction overturned: Gina represented a young woman who was convicted of killing her toddler and was serving a life sentence. Gina convinced the judge to overturn the 1st degree murder conviction and order a new trial for the client. The judge granted a new trial because Gina was able to establish that the client’s trial attorney made several serious errors at the client’s first trial.
