I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Law (ranked 68th nationally) in 1996. Upon graduation, I returned to Minnesota, passed the bar on my first attempt and began practicing in criminal law and then family law. In 2003, I was admitted to the North Dakota bar and began practicing law on behalf of both personal injury plaintiffs and defendants. I soon began practicing in both Minnesota and North Dakota federal court (see Slivicki v. Dept. of Veteran's Affairs, 2006 WL 2780113, 2006 US DIST LEXIS 73437 and most recently, Larson v. Dept. of Homeland Security, 2012 WL 1899714, 2012 US DIST LEXIS 72234). I also have experience representing physicians (see Hsu v. ND Board of Medical Examiners, 726 NW2d 216), asbestos defendants (see Vicknair v. Phelps Dodge Industries, 767 NW2d 171, 2009 ND 113 & Vickair II, 794 NW2d 746, 2011 ND 39), bars/restaurants in dram shop actions (see Medland v. Extra Innings Saloon, 2007 WL 5861162, Platt v. Blue Fox Inn & Jimmy's Food & Drink 2007 WL 4562108) and Title IX plaintiffs (see Minnesota Practice at 2007 WL 5321905 and Swanbeck v. Minnesota State University Moorhead, 2006 WL 5616701). I currently practice worker's compensation and personal injury law for Schoep & McCashin, Chtd in Alexandria, MN
I knew I wanted to be a lawyer since I was in grade school. All I really knew about lawyers back then, though, was what I saw on L.A. Law. When I entered college at St. Olaf, a liberal arts school, I did so with an open mind. If another discipline piqued my interest more than law, I would pursue that. Nothing ever did. My constitiutional law classes in college cemented my decision to go to law school.. It was in law school at William Mitchell that I first became aware of family law. It never occured to me that there was so much law - and so many rules - that applied to people going through a divorce. Clerking for a Judge right out of law school, I saw first hand how much of an impact the lawyering can have on the results of family law cases. That inspired me to pursue a career helping people in family law.. Outside of the office, I am a sports nut. I curl in the winter (think rocks on ice) and I play softball in the summer months. I am also a music lover. I enjoy classic rock (especially Lynyrd Skynyrd - I've been to 20 concerts or so) and I play trombone in my church's brass choir. I also enjoy traveling with my wife and two sons.
I have practiced family law in the Twin Cities area for over 30 years, and recently started a law firm with my daughter Madeline, a 2018 graduate of Mitchell Hamline School of Law. We are located at the Collaborative Law Alliance in Edina, Minnesota and serve clients throughout the state of Minnesota.. Let our family protect yours at this difficult time in your life.
I believe that extraordinary case results come from extraordinary efforts. I bring to the table the experience, wisdom, and know-how of over 50 jury trials for the defense with a winning record of over 89%. I am a Minnesota State Certified Criminal Law Specialist, a designation attained by only 3% of attorneys statewide and less than 1% of criminal lawyers in Minnesota. I assess each case for the best legal issues and defenses, and I actively fight the case by filing motions and challenging the State's evidence. I know which cases should be tried, and how to win them. Whether your case needs a passionate negotiator, a know-how litigator, or a successful trial attorney, I welcome the opportunity to speak to you today regarding your criminal case.

For Sophia, being an effective legal advocate is about educating, empowering and then confidently guiding her clients to family law and estate planning solutions in line with they and their family’s best interests. In both of her practices, Sophia brings a unique perspective and skillset attributable to her ongoing involvement in complex commercial negotiation and contracting, which has proved advantageous to her private family law and estate planning clients. In her family law practice, Sophia’s approach is straight forward and solution-focused, as she has found that often the best outcomes come from those negotiated between parties who are the experts of their own lives, and often not the Court. However, Sophia is mindful that a trial is necessary in some cases, and prepares for this possibility throughout her clients’ case. In her estate planning practice, Sophia enjoys helping her clients write and carry out their own legacy. She sees estate planning as an opportunity to dictate strategic outcomes after a life well-lived, and enjoys the long-term nature of the estate planning practice as it allows her to establish long-lasting and trusting relationships with her clients. No matter the task, Sophia will provide honest input and guidance, and will work tirelessly to obtain the best possible outcome for her clients and their families..
