During that time, I served as chairman of the Fairfax Bar's Generald District Court Committee and its Public Relations Committee.. I have lived in Warrenton, Virginia since 1985, and my wife and I raised our children in Fauquier County. Since 2005, my law firm's increasing business in Virginia's Piedmont Region has caused me to divide my time between our firm’s Fairfax City and Warrenton offices. My practice emphasizes civil and criminal litigation and personal injury law. I have tried numerous cases before judges and juries throughout all of Northern Virginia.. I served in the Army and Army National Guard from 1979 to 2004. I spent my first 7 years as an Infantry officer and my remaining 18 years as a "JAG", an Army lawyer, and retired as a lieutenant colonel. My military experience, and working my way through school, give me a “real world” perspective that is invaluable in understanding the concerns of my clients and giving them appropriate counseling and advice. I draw on this experience in and out of the courtroom to devise practical approaches to counseling and litigation. I carefully review the facts of each case and then work with each client to either structure a resolution or take the matter to trial.. I was the first person in my family in more than seven generations to attend college. I grew up poor and very disadvantaged but with a deep sense of how fortunate I was. I attended public schools throughout my education, including law school, and developed an appreciation of how unfair our society, and particularly the criminal justice system, could be for people who were poor, uneducated, or who looked differently and the degree of injustice seemed to directly correspond to the seriousness of the offense and the accused's disadvantages. For most of my career I worked representing indigent defendants - including approximately 150 who were facing the death penalty - in the same zealous and aggressive way that people with means expect from our system. I continue to approach each of my client's as individuals in need of my help, and their cases as the most important and honorable way to utilize my skills and experience. You should expect nothing less.

I was raised in the woods and water of Calvert County, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. My parents taught me at a young age that everything in life is about trust and relationships. Be honest, do your best to help people, and always believe in what you do.. At age 14, my parents sent me to work for his grandfather’s marine mechanic business to “build character.” Hauling toolboxes in the summer heat on the docks of the Waterfront in Washington, D.C. did indeed build character, and I develop a strong work ethic as a result. I learned that there is pride in doing even the “dirtiest” jobs and satisfaction in honest pay for honest work.. I became fascinated with courts and the world of law in elementary school, where I would rush home every day to watch the O.J. Simpson trial on TV with my dad. I saw early on how powerful good advocacy can be. I carried this passion for advocacy through to the high school mock trial team and eventually to the George Mason University School of Law, where I graduated with honors.. Out of law school, I worked in private practice in northern Virginia. Excited to help anyone who needed a good advocate, I have handled a wide range of legal matters. From jury trials to local zoning board meetings and appeals to the Supreme Court of Virginia, my passion for advocacy has taken me anywhere that my clients need me to go!. I live in Herndon, Virginia and am huge a film buff. I enjoy discovering hidden gem movies, both old and new. I am always be happy to talk to you about what you have seen recently or some old favorites you revisit again and again.

I try to help clients make the best use of an initial interview as possible by encouraging them to bring as much financial information with them to the initial interview as they can.  I do this so that I can help the client understand the range of  results likely if their case is tried (assuming the information they provide is accurate) and upon what the range depends.. Knowing the likely result of a trial  helps the client and I decide together on the strategy which is most likely to be both effective and cost effective, set a reasonable budget for the case and helps the client recognize a good settlement offer should one be made.

I have formed hundreds, if not thousands, of new businesses. I have watched mom and pop businesses achieve family goals, and have seen small businesses with big dreams implement legal and business solutions to become major players in their industries.. My positive client interaction with business owners who are trying to achieve their goals is a strong motivator in my decision to focus his practice on business and commercial law. I regularly work with optimistic, upbeat, and aggressive entrepreneurs and business owners to create short and long-term business strategies and legal needs. I have the experience to provide the practical legal solutions to complicated business situations. Time and again I have found that the pure legal analysis and legal courses of action may not be the best solution for businesses and business owners. Rather, seeking win-win solutions, which involve a balancing of the legal positions against the monetary and non-monetary costs leads to alternative, non-litigation solutions.. Business owners usually want cost effective solutions, not legal positions that lead to polarization and the loss of business deals and transactions. A transaction should never fall through because of attorneys advocating positions that create adversity. Rather, a lawyer should always seek solutions that will allow transactions to be consummated and problems to be resolved.. When dealing with employees and employment situations, I have found that employers want solutions that will minimize or remove the threat of litigation. With the cost of defending major employment suits averaging over $125,000, most business have to find solutions to employment problems that protect the business interests while bringing closure to the problems.. Admitted to the Virginia bar in 1978 and to the District of Columbia bar in 1994, I bring considerable experience to the practice of business and commercial law in Northern Virginia.
