I was the first person in my family in more than seven generations to attend college. I grew up poor and very disadvantaged but with a deep sense of how fortunate I was. I attended public schools throughout my education, including law school, and developed an appreciation of how unfair our society, and particularly the criminal justice system, could be for people who were poor, uneducated, or who looked differently and the degree of injustice seemed to directly correspond to the seriousness of the offense and the accused's disadvantages. I was raised in the woods and water of Calvert County, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. My parents taught me at a young age that everything in life is about trust and relationships. At age 14, my parents sent me to work for his grandfather’s marine mechanic business to “build character.” Hauling toolboxes in the summer heat on the docks of the Waterfront in Washington, D.C. did indeed build character, and I develop a strong work ethic as a result. I am originally from the West Coast where I obtained both a B.S. and a B. A. degree from San Diego State University in 1986.  After spending a month traveling Europe with an Eurail Pass and a Youth Hostel Card, I decided to attend law school. I attended California Western School of Law, graduating in 1991.. I spent the first seven years of my legal career in San Diego, California, where I represented more than 400 clients in a wide range of legal matters, including personal injury, medical malpractice, contract disputes and wrongful banking practices..
