Prior to joining my current firm, I worked at a large law firm in Chicago where I represented clients throughout the United States in large complex litigation matters.  My current practice includes representation of Plaintiffs and Defendants in catasrophic injury cases as well as complex litigation matters involving corporate entities, municipalities and school districts.  I have tried cases in counties throughout Illinois and have represend clients in a wide range of administative proceedings including proceeding before the EEOC, IDHR and DOL. Originally from Berwyn, Illinois, I graduated from Fenwick High School in Oak Park and the College (now University) of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois.  At St. Francis I earned a B.A. in Journalism/Communications and worked as a radio announcer for a number of local stations.. After graduating St. Francis I was accepted into the Notre Dame Law School Class of 1998, earning my J.D. while working for a South Bend law firm.. I began my criminal law career as an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Office of the Will County State’s Attorney, primarily prosecuting DUI cases.  Eventually, I was appointed to the federally funded Cold Case Task Force in conjunction with the Joliet Police Department and the Will County Coroners Office, investigating and prosecuting cold case homicides.  In 2008 I was a candidate for Circuit Judge of the 4th Sub-Circuit.. Using the skills I developed and honed as a prosecutor, I have practiced as a criminal defense attorney since 2008, primarily defending the very types of cases I used to prosecute.

Prior to becoming a defense attorney, I spent spent 5 years working as an Assistant State’s Attorney at the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office in Joliet. During my time in that office, I was assigned to the Felony Narcotics Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit, and the Aggravated Traffic and Misdemeanor Unit, where Iprosecuted hundreds of drug cases, domestic battery offenses, and DUIs. I am also the only former ASA form the Civil Asset Forfeiture Unit that now defends those cases.. I went to Law School at the DePaul University College of Law where I graduated in 2006. During my time there, I was an extern for a Federal Judge working on one of the largest software patent infringement cases that was pending in the Federal Courts at that time. I was also a leading member of DePaul’s Moot Court Trial Team, competing in competitions across the country. Prior to that, I attended the University of Illinois in Champaign / Urbana where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. During my time in college, I was an intern for Microsoft and IBM. I developed a passion for law, thinking I could blend my engineering experience with an understanding of the law. While in law school, I quickly became focused on becoming a litigator and trial attorney.. I have lived in Will County for over 10 years with my two daughters. I enjoys live music, watching football, and plays the occasional round of poker.

Most people who meet me know me as a husband and father of two daughters.  I'm a "dance dad" and softball coach, who likes to work hard fighting for my clients.  I also love to exercise.  I started going to CrossFit in March of 2016 and have lost over 70 pounds.  I also happen to be a highly reviewed attorney in the area, as well as the recipient of several honors, incuding being named a “Rising Star” attorney by Illinois Super Lawyers magazine, a designation limited to less than 2.5% of lawyers under 40 years of age in the State of Illinois and as an Emerging Lawyer by Leading Lawyers and recently the firm was named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best law firms in 2017.. I have spent my career practicing law in courtrooms and Illinois Workers' Compensation settings throughout Illinois, including Chicago, Dupage, Kane, Kendall, Will, Grundy and many more counties.  When I am not busy fighting for the rights of my clients, you can usually find me supporting my daughters at a dance competition or coaching softball.   I love coaching softball as it gives me the opportunity to teach the girls the proper way to play the game as well as pass on my knowledge as a former collegiate baseball player at North Central College, Go Cardinals!  If I am not doing one of the above you can find me working hard at the gym.. I also have a typical attorney story as well, I am a 2008 graduate of the Hamline University School of Law (after attending North Central College for undergraduate work).  Since that time my practice area has been exclusively workers' compensation and personal injury.  I concentrate my practice on representing those who are injured by others.

Joel received his B.A. from Southern Illinois University while majoring in the Administration of Justice and with double minors in Spanish and Zoology. Joel also earned his Juris Doctorate at the Southern Illinois University School of Law. While in law school Joel travelled across the country excelling in Moot Court Competitions and continues to serve as a judge for National Moot Court competitions at the University. Eric P. Hanson practices in the areas of local government and municipal law, land use, DUI and employment practice.
