Since 1980 I have specialized in the area of civil appeals and writs. Isuccessfully passed the second exam given by the State Bar forcertification as an appellate specialist in 1999. Not only do I handleappeals, but I am a frequent lecturer and author on appellate love the intellectual challenge of working on appeals! I also spent many years working on law and motion matters on aconsulting basis for other attorneys. My book, California SummaryJudgment and Related Termination Motions, is now published by TheRutter Group. If that wasn't enough, I spent over five years as theeditor of several legal magazines for plaintiff's lawyers, includingPlaintiff, The Advocate, The Forum, and The Gavel. I am a mother.  I am a lawyer. I specilaize in childrens law, specifically adoption, assisted reproduction technology law, school discipline and special education.. Passion for public service led me to a career in the Orange County District Attorney's Office where I served as a prosecutor for 16 years.  During that time, I completed over 100 criminal trials.  I was assigned to Juvenile Court for a year and a half early in my career.  I felt very strongly about my responsibility, even as a prosecutor, to do what was in the best interest of the child.. After felony panel, I was assigned to vertically prosecute felony domestic violence cases.  I also specialized in legal research and writing for several years. I researched, wrote, and argued over 250 felony motions, and I argued before the Court of Appeal.  I also developed and conducted training for the Orange County District Attorney's Office, various police agencies, colleges, and law schools. For outstanding service to victims and witnesses of domestic violence, I was awarded the "Courts Community Service Award" by Victim Assistance Programs, CSP, Inc.  I was also recognized as a "Diligent Prosecutor" by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).. I taught as an adjunct professor at Western State School of Law in 2004 and 2005, teaching one class on research and writing, and two classes on domestic violence.. In 2009, I earned my L.L.M. in Prosecutorial Science, at Chapman University School of Law.  My studies included Advanced Professional Responsibility, Advanced Criminal Procedure, Appellate Practice and Procedure, Advanced Evidence, Criminal Law and Psychology, Handling the Homicide Case, and Jursidprudence.  As part of the Directed Research program, I researched and authored a legal article on the asportation element of kidnapping which was published in the California State Bar Journal in 2011.. In 2010, after forming my own family through adoption and assisted reproduction technology, I left the District Attorney's office and formed a partnership where I could  focus on children's law.  We specialized in education law, adoptions, assisted reproduction law, and criminal defense of adults and juveniles.. Ms. Cannon commenced her legal career 34 years ago.  She is a graduate of the University of Maryland with distinction and Southwestern School of Law, where she earned an academic scholarship each year she attended, received the Bancroft Whitney Book Award in Uniform Commercial Code transactions, and was listed in Who’s Who Among American Law Students.. Following law school Ms. Cannon learned the practice of civil litigation in a prestigious law firm where she handled cases and trials in both state and federal courts, including jury trials.  Ms. Cannon is therefore admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and each of the four United States District Courts in Californi. Ms. Cannon took her federal and state court practice experience to the family arena, certifying as a specialist in family law.  This certification has been reserved to approximately two (2) percent of the active licensed attorneys in California.  Ms. Cannon has defended the rights of parents to reunify with their children in the juvenile dependency system and has additionally litigated children’s rights when they conflict with those of their parents.. In 2013 Ms. Cannon worked with a local legislator to propose an amendment to the Family Code requiring judges to consider prescription drug abuse as they do illegal drug abuse and alcoholism in family law cases.  She testified before both the state assembly and state senate regarding the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse among parents and its impact on families in California.  In September of 2013, after the proposed amendment to Family Code section 3011(d) garnered bi-partisan support, Governor Brown signed it into law.  The amendment became law in California on January 1st, 2014.. Ms. Cannon has frequently volunteered her time at local domestic violence clinics and always maintains at least one pro bono matter in her ongoing caseload..
